Why is AMD quiet about black screens on 290x?

Good new s from caveman Jim, driver update coming this week to fix black screen issue

http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=34006026

Hello everyone,

Our Customer Support and Driver Teams have been aware of this problem and been working on it; they collected lots of feedback from our Support Forums, which has been very helpful.

I'd also like to thank those of you who have reached out to me directly via PM (i.e. weldon855) to provide more details about the issue.

We are going to release a new driver tomorrow which will fix the black screen problem you've been experiencing.

Thank you very much for your patience

THANK YOU.

Sidenote:

Ordered some goodies for my 290x :D.

Thanks for the update, but that's thrown a spanner in the works!

Been looking at a 290, but with the black screen problem, there was no way I was going to risk it as my kid is a hardcore PC nut and I need stability first and foremost for him-the blackscreen issue I 100% will live without.

I was leaning towards a 780 for PhysX and my boy would put shadowplay to good use as he keeps badgering me to upload some vids to his youtube channel.

The downside to Nvidia though is whether the Nvidia 3D hack for my sammy actually works and is viable as I like my 3D and I'm not willing to junk my very good monitor for a higher changeover cost to then be tied to Nvidia.:(

And last but not least, from what Iv'e read on the forum, Nvidia isn't as stable in BF4 as AMD-as it's been flawless on my 7950's-and that is my main game for the foreseeable future I imagine.

You're not buying a 290 because you're afraid your kid wont approve it or whatver? lol

Guys I have a VERY serious question (since amd said its a driver problem..?)

if it's a driver problem, how come:
1) some people who had black screens RMA'd their cards and the new card was rock solid?

2) How come I haven't experienced any black screens? (the only time I ever had one was when overclocking the memory through CCC and after restarting, it applied the oc on startup and blackscreened on desktop after any gpu/scrolling activity--that's when I knew that that type of lockup had to be something related to memory or GPU protection shutdown).. I've even gone to 1150/1500 (90% fan) with +100mv and it ran 3dmark/firestrike like a baws, and heaven is solid with 1125/1500 and +50mv. I didn't see any probs in BF4 either, and one test mentioned on ocuk, running "dark Souls" which caused this one guy to black screen almost instantly, seemed fine too (and MAME emulator was fine).

Sure I'll do more testing to try to trigger it, but why isn't it happening to me?
(and why does it seem the vast majority of cases are those with elpida memory rather than Hynix?).

Thank you.

1. Many think its related to ASIC or component combinations. Im one of them.
2. You're barely overvolting.

Okay I think I found a way to solve my specific problem (which is that my monitor loses signal, but the game still runs in the background). Previously I had to reduce the core clock to 920MHz.

Now I found that reducing both the core voltage and aux voltage to -44 (I keep the Power Limit at +50), I can play at stock clocks. I have tested BF4, Assassin's Creed 4 and Batman Arkham Origins and no loss of signal to my monitor yet.

Does this mean it's definitely a driver problem for me and not hardware? I really don't want to rma this card.

Its a driver issue. Dont RMA just YET.

No black screens so far for me in bf4 (in fact not one crash of any kind all day)

Although the FPS seems to fluctuate a lot more than previous drivers. Might be my imagination but doesn't seem to play BF4 as smooth??

Any one else tried these drivers in Bf4 yet?

Butter smooth for me. I guess you're subconsciously looking for an error in this driver :D

not sure what your implying , I used DDU to remove previous drivers and i have no performance tab in the new beta 9.4 drivers. removing the 9.4 catalyst control centre and installing the control centre from beta 9.2 brings the performance tab back.

if you still have the performance tab in 9.4, overdrive probably isn't functioning correctly.

apologies if your post wasn't directed at me.

Well i dont. So i did it correctly.

Indeed he is not clear.

Which means that its takes longer to black screen.

So its not fixed but that must also be at stock because if the harder to induce means overclocking then he should have specified because that changes it to it is fixed at stock but now needs an OC to black screen.

So yes his post is ambiguous.

I have said from the VERY BEGINNING that im ocing. And that im encountering black screens when overvolting too much. (Some have fixed their black screens by undervolting)

My post is NOT vague or unclear, if you guys actually READ my posts you'd see that i AM ocing. I cant give you a result from a stock clock standpoint because i never had black screens on STOCK.

Now stop trying to accuse me of being unclear when you cant understand my post BECAUSE you didnt CARE to read my previous posts.

This is your first post, you should have stated clearly in that first post that its only when overclocking then it would have put everything in the right context from the very being and then people would not have to read many subsequent posts of yours to work out that it is only when overclocking and skim reading through page after page with a high chance of missing that crucial post, with many just reading the first few posts and then going to the last page, it was your 7th post before you mentioned OCing.

You may just have a bad clocker then.

Lol another troll.

Keep with the name calling because you cant handle the facts of what you said you did from the very beginning and what you actually did when you started this thread including the title because both imply the issue at stock, you were not clear from the being period, which would not be a problem if for the fact that you keep claiming that you were, so you brought that on yourself, you could have saved plenty of headache by editing your first post.

And now look at the other fact which is now put into context with your latest comments.

Which means you think that you are entitled to a greater OC than what you are currently getting and AMD is obligated to give it to you.

for the 10th ****ing time. I dont get black screens because of ocing (I have said this several times to several people in this thread, including gregster). I get it from overvolting. I can overvolt on stock and induce black screens. Now start reading posts and stop making uneducated claims. Blocked.
