Why is it so difficult to develope a good pirate game?

The remake of sid mier's pirates i thought was a huge dissapointment , granted the sea battles were fun but the entire game is like playing a cartoon and constantly having reborn dead enemies is pathetic. How many times do i have to kill that baron just to get that map only for him to have a brand new instant top of the line galleon . I don't even look like a pirate just some bloke straight out of a disney cartoon , don't even get me started on the dancing.

Possibly a stupid question, but have you seen the relatively modern PC version of Sid Meier's Pirates?

;)

Ignoring the thread's "vintage" age... :D
I sort of want to play a piratey type game now, has there been anything decent in this genre over the last few years?

was wondering why nobody had mentioned black flag at all, might have been a ubisoft game but so far nobody's come close to the "cannonballs whizzing over your head smoke everywhere pitched battles on the decks" kind of gameplay.

blackwake does look cool though, like someone played black flag then guns of icarus and said "i have an idea...."

Love how this has been necro'd, hate how it's still as Neil says stuck with no real solution.

Black flag was fun but completely unrealistic, Blackwake has some potential though. Heck Pixel Pirates is better than some of the more realistic "pirate" games I've seen recently.

Tis always a balance though, between realism and fun, after all imagine if they did bf1 as a realistic portrayal, would be "standing in a muddy ditch for 3 weeks then calmly walk into a machine gun simulator 2017"

if you just want ship battles.
keep an eye on naval action currently in alpha or beta.

i hope it turns out great as i need a replacement for PotBS

Dont know if it's been mentioned, but our Pirate itch will be scratched this year, my most anticipated title of 2017.

Sea of Thieves

There is some footage on YouTube, it's going to be AWESOME!!!

Imagine a Pirate game on the detail of the Pirates and Pirate ship of Uncharted 4. It was dark and eerie.

Has Blood and Gold: Caribbean been mentioned?
Never played it but someone must have. Its heavily based on Mount & Blade.

Or Risen 2.....
