Why is tax so high ?

companys buy suff vat free too to sell on..

Its shocking, it was only meant to be a temp rise but i bet it rises higher before falling. its worse when you put a lot of hours in at work and see your payslip and you've paid 100-200 to tax in a week

i spet 8 weeks in jury service on a multimillion vat fraud case so this is boring the crap out of me now. im out :P

It sounds silly, but I never really comprehended or scrutinised government spending until I realised how much income tax I give them since working full time. A lot of money!

I suppose we take a lot of things for granted though.

Do the smart thing at put your 40% earnings in a salary sacrifice pension scheme they said... Worked out at almost 1m in contributions for a 18k pension, lol no thanks pal.

Put it in an ISA post tax they said... Measly interest and low yearly allowance.

PAYE trapped.

If you earn £35k gross, then you take home £26.62k net after tax and NI. So your effective taxation rate is 24%.

Of direct taxation. However, you then pay VAT on most of what you buy (essentials excluded such as basic food) plus fuel duty and vat, council tax etc.

As I have said, it is estimated that a standard 40% taxpayer family ffecticely pays a total tax of around 59% on their income once you account for all the other "taxes".

So every £100 you earn gross you are only really left with £41.

Out of interest the fish and chip shop is the HMRC favourite business. Practically all the raw ingredients bought (potatoes, fish etc) have no VAT on them but once cooked the chip shop has to charge VAT and all the customers aren't businesses so there won't be any claiming back of the VAT.

Most of above come from your council tax and it's debatable if you get value for money from them, ie waste collection is a joke.

Most of the Police, fire budget etc is actually given by government grant. Only about 1/3 of the Police budget is funded by council tax.

I was about to buy a GTX 780 and noticed without VAT it is £100 cheaper, Come on, £100, Seriously ?
Anyone else agree this is a little much to shove on top, I know it's a luxury item but wow.

Somewhere there's a workshy chav or extremist who wants free stuff.

That's why.

Where did you get those figures from?

I earn 39k and don't take home as much as you say for 35k.

You must have loads of benefits in kind so your total "wage" is actaully way above £39k

£26,617 is indeed the take home pay of a person on £35k assuming they have full personal allowances.

£39k gives you £29,337.76 take home pay.
