Why no Android phones with a slide out qwerty ?

Been on the hunt for a new phone now for months, just cannot find a single phone that really takes my fancy.

I really want something with a qwerty this time as I have rather large, bananna like hands :D However the 2 main contenders dont overly grab me, that being the HTC Touch Pro 2 and the Nokia N97 as I'm not overly keen on the OS.

Have played around with the BB Bold and my GF has the curve, and I really liked it but I think I would miss the touch interface for speed of access to some functions.

So any ideas, anything on the horizon that I've compleatly over looked in terms of a slide qwerty running Android ? I really hope so as to be honest, I'm totally fed up of looking at phones and mobile phone sites :(

but it's not 2004 anymore and when sat next to an Android phone, it's not as good. WM feels like everything has been added on to the OS, bodged and patch here and there to make it handle new features. Android feels deliberate. I am comparing my HTC Hero here to my mates (HTC) SE X1, both run the same CPU. My phone is nicer to use and it makes better use of its resources.

Anyway.. on topic..

If you have big clunky hands (i do), forget the slide out QWERTY. They're fiddly things to use, again thats comparing with using an N97 and the X1. When my phone is in portrait mode, i have a phone keypad as an on screen keyboard and it flicks to QWERTY when landscape. So i'd advise full touch screen phone, or a normal keypad.

I've had WM phones since 2004, and even with all the niggles (of which there are far fewer these days), it still is exactly what I need from a phone OS.

The thread starter was asking about QWERTY Android phones though, not WM!

I had a Touch HD so I know what WM is like and I prefer Android.

You mean other than the G1?

Yeah sorry, should have said that T-Mobile is shocking where I live (Isle of Wight), which is why I didnt mention it, my mistake. :D

Have had a look at the Palm Pre, I know its not Android based but looks like an interesting piece of kit. Shame its O2 exclusive and bound to be tied upto an overpriced tarriff or I think that may have been a contender :(

Considered buying a G1 second hand?

If you have the cash, buy one for about £200 second hand in mint condition then barter down the price of your existing contract.

I wanted android and a qwerty keyboard so I decided to get the G1. I managed to get brand new mint G1 from a certain auction site for £150. Paid £10 to get it unlocked so I could use it on o2. Changed my plan to Simplicity where I pay £20 a month for 600 mins, 1200 texts and unlimited internet.

Still loving it... But I want the hero now!

Don't get me wrong, I like Android, but until they release a nice looking, qwerty-keyboard phone with a higher screen resolution (I can't go backwards after having 800x480 for the past year), I'll happily stick with WM with 3rd party UIs.

Also, having just sold my Xperia, and received a Touch Pro2 (which have the same internals), it highlighted how poorly optimized the Xperia was. My TP2 flies in comparison in every aspect, and has a bigger, brighter screen.

I just wish large, high-res capacitive screens would get released already!

Nokia N900 when it is released in a month or so?
Not sure what the phone application support is like but there are loads of programs available in terms of the linux os.

looks very good but if i can hold off i will wait for a qwerty android with arm cortex a8 before splashing the cash. even without a qwerty keyboard i could be tempted so long as predictive text is good enough!

What networks are people getting the touche pro 2 on? There was a really good deal on an 18th month orange contract from phones 4 u but it seems to have gone. Everything is 24 months and a lot of money now! Orange don't seem to sell it direct either.

Only problem with the Xperia IMO was rubbish reception and rubbish camera, tho video recording and playback left a bit to be desired - on the playback side this was due to lack of hardware driver support...

The resisitive touchscreen is excellent, very precise and nice resolution and OS/performance wise mine flies - none of the pauses or lockups some people complain of - almost everything is literally instant.

I'll be sorry when the xperia is gone as I've not seen another phone with as nice styling and as good qwerty keyboard. Personally I'm not a fan of the curved styling on the TP2.
