Why Origin is Poor, Why Steam is Not

Uplay also needs to sort out its patching system, having to download and install multiple patches is just stupid. Just do the one update.

Even Origin can do this right.

I had to install Uplay to play FarCry 3 Blood Dragon - hadn't realised that before I bought it.

Download speeds were terrible, inconsistent and the client frequently crashed, or threw up error messages. After a bit it did settle down and become stable, but it was still plug-ugly, and completely unnecessary.

I've been completely put off purchasing FarCry 3 because it needs Uplay, and it's been uninstalled from my PC and isn't going back on, so hopefully I may play it one day if they drop their rubbish client.

If you game offline Uplay is dead easy, it's never crashed once, the only pain is Steam.

i'm not sure about Origin , i was after Crysis 3 but i need to research more

They're EXE's, it's down to the game maker to supply the Mac games, not the delivery platform.

Personally I don't use Origin, because EA = ruin gaming

I don't think Origin is as bad as many people try to make out, I've had very few problems with it and I think the interface is much better than both Steam and Uplay. Also, Origin's sales have been pretty good recently compared to the Steam sales - just a couple of months ago I grabbed Crysis 3 for just ~£5.

I find it amusing that people hold Steam up as something to try and emulate. People were going absolutely nuts when HL2 came out and you HAD to install steam. Back then and really only until a couple of years ago Steam was also a pile of crap. Constant disconnections, unable to connect, lost communication with with the steam servers etc. Some of those still happen. If you compare Origin and Steam at at the same timescales from Launch I have to say Origin is a lot better than Steam was.

I'd agree with this, but not really crediting EA, as a lot of stuff will have been learned from Steam, considering Valve pioneered the way both Steam and Origin are today.

At the moment Steam is way ahead of Origin, whether this will change in the future remains to be seen.

This does also not relate to Mac releases, which are not down to the distributor, but the game maker.

Judging by how painfully slow Steam gets updates and how there are 8 year old bugs still present in the software, it's inevitable that both Origin + Uplay will become superior at some point. Won't stop fanboys being fanboys though.

Steam has it's downfalls, but I still love it. If it wasn't for valve, I don't think I'd even have a PC

Both are poor Steam is also becoming just the same as Xbox Live & once Valve start selling movies the forced ads will come as well :( I guess the PC gaming £££ was not enough for Valve was it

On the subject of PC digital distro, where does World of Warcraft lie? Is Battle.net their equivalent to Steam and Origin? It might seem a very basic question but I'm still new to digital distro having only joined Steam a few months back. I am embracing it though, as I like the idea of playing one game, then switch to another game without having to change CDs. F12 for screenshots and other key-bindings are universal across all games. It backs up your saves. It has a chat client. I'm sure that Origin has these benefits too, but I'm apprehensive of joining Origin because of its stance on game licensing. Is there any chance that the Sims franchise will become available on Steam?

I think I am one of very few gamers who is willing to openly admit that I think Origin is actually pretty good, I have had less issues with it than I have with steam but admittedly I use it far less.

It works very well for what it is. Most issues seem to be born out of the fact that people are just annoyed by inconvenience, which is fair enough but that isn't a fault of the program its a fault of EA.

I think Origin is absolutely fine, never had a problem with it. But I should note I only play BF from it.

Uplay, eeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhh. Most recently on Uplay I was trying to play SC: Blacklist, every time I loaded it there was a patch that took ages to download, it could have even been the same the patch I was redownloading every time. I have no idea what's going on with it.

Steam, the main thing I don't like about it is the fanboys, like "no steam no buy". Such irrationality frazzles my mind.

As someone with zero loyalty to any game company or brand in existence I'm actually preferring Origin at the moment. Sure there's times it make me want to punch my computer screen but for the last month it has been perfect. Quick log in, excellent and consistent download speeds and quick game launches.

Then again Steam has been the same too. No issues there.

Uplay, BIG issues.
