Why shouldn't cyclists be able to use the motorway?

I cycle to work every day in Cambridgeshire and wouldn't cycle down the A14 if you paid me, and that's only a dual carriageway. You'd probably have to have a gun to my head before I'd even consider cycling 1 mile down a motorway. It'd be far, far, too dangerous.

It's pure insanity to even consider. There's absolutely no benefits to allowing cyclists on motorways, for anyone at all, including cyclists.

It's actually great when big trucks or giant RVs go by, you get a nice little tailwind boost which is handy going up hills  :p

I avoid roads where at all possible when on my MTB, glad to be blessed with an area where there are so many routes to do so.

Ride on a motorway: I can think of infinitely less messy and possibly less painful ways to commit suicide.

I wouldn't even want to take a motorbike on the motorway tbh :p

The thought of *any* two wheeled vehicle on a motorway is terrifying!

Stupid by GD standards, well done, haz a cookie.

They are banned the same way any slow moving traffic is banned. It's dangerous, motorways are designed for cars. Imagine a lorry trying to merge off a sliproad with a cyclist on the main carriageway, it'd be utter chaos!

Prohibited vehicles. Motorways MUST NOT be used by pedestrians, holders of provisional motorcycle or car licences, riders of motorcycles under 50 cc, cyclists, horse riders, certain slow-moving vehicles and those carrying oversized loads (except by special permission), agricultural vehicles, and powered wheelchairs/powered mobility scooters (see Rules 36 to 46 inclusive)
Laws HA 1980 sects 16, 17 & sch 4, MT(E&W)R regs 3(d), 4 & 11, MT(E&W)(A)R, R(S)A sects 7, 8 & sch 3, RTRA sects 17(2) & (3), & MT(S)R reg 10

It's not just cyclists, it's anything slow. It's common sense.

Oh I don't know - I've competed in time trials on the A19 and all the passing high speed traffic sure does help to eek out a few more mph!

It would be an intetesting experience for cyclists crossing the entrance of slip roads while cars are getting up to full speed to join.

Ok I should have used the correct terminology for the anally minded, emissions or not if I had any sway with the government I'd be making a few changes.

Here's the correct term quoted.

Firstly, “road tax” does not exist, and has not existed since the 1930s. What drivers do pay, however, is Vehicle Excise Duty, which is often known as road tax but is not strictly the same thing. Vehicle Excise Duty - what you pay for your car’s tax disc - is based on your vehicle’s emissions. Since a bike creates no emissions, it is not liable for Vehicle Excise Duty.

Certainly cyclists shouldn't use the hard shoulder, but perhaps they could be allowed to use the otherwise unused space in the central reservation?
The only disadvantage is that they wouldn't be able to join or leave the motorway at any point.
