why so many reports of ssd drives dissapearing?

ive been here for a couple of months now and i find it wierd that there are reports of ssd's just dissapearing from the boot sequence and not showing up in the bios.

And im not talking about old/bad drives, seemingly it could be a brand new ssd that doesnt "show up" - what is going on?! :confused:

But I'm guessing it's due to a BIOS problem or poor firmware on the drive.

Isn't it mostly Ocz drives?

Yep, OCZ drives. Mine started crashing Windows then failing to show up in BIOS. I've had it since February. Am now running from my Seagate until this is fixed.

I'm getting the same from my Agility 3, if it continues I'll return it and get something reliable/fit for purpose like an Intel.

I've had a Vertex 2E in my other machine for 6+ months without issue however, although I'm probably doomed for saying that now.

It does make me wonder just what is going on at OCZ that they're selling stuff with such obvious problems.

OCZ support is a joke sometimes, i have many SSDs pass through over the last few years and i use mostly OCZ for builds. Have had quite a few issues like the OP mentioned especially with the older Limited Edition drives. My own vertexes/2Es etc.. have been mostly reliable but lately one of the 120gb ones has sometimes popped up Windows error messages about bad image files and needed a recovery disc fix this week. I might try a firmware update but who knows. I've solved most of my SSD problems myself as OCZs support forums really either couldn't care less or just didn't know the solutions.

my vertex 2 120gb has just died this morning just made it over a month old, wont be buying another thats for sure peice of crap compared to trusty intel x25m which hasnt had one problem and is around 2years old

I'm not sure if it's just OCZ or Sandforce in general, apparently the Force 3's are having similar problems to the Agility/Vertex 3's.

You rarely, if ever see issues with Crucial/Intel drives and that's what I'd recommend to buy.

I wonder how many of these SSD's had been updated to the latest firmware? I suspect older firmware might be a factor with some of the OCZ Vertex drives suddenly not being detected. This is something that Sandforce may not wish to mention in their list of firmware bug fixes mind.

I am using a corsair 40gb SSD as my boot drive and never had any issues with it at all.

i got my vertex working again using the method they pm'd me on their support forum, but i aint putting my trust into them again, ive lost a lot of valueable data, how the hell can a drive just currupt its firmware data just like that, surely it should be write protected.

gone back to using my nearly 2 year old x25m now not one glitch with it, only slightly faster by 10mb at reading but half the write speed of the vertex

but reliability is the key, not investing my hard earned money into a peice of junk that ****s up just like that.

I still take regular images of my install despite using a SSD which is supposed to be more reliable than a HDD. If it's important data then always assume the worst can/will happen and take regular backups.
