why tft

Not sure about better res, a good 19" CRT will go miles higher than a 19" TFT.

Anyway, the way I see it is - TFTs use a lot less desk space, they're much easier to move about if you ever want to take them anywhere, they use about one third of the power, they don't generate anywhere near as much heat, they have sharper and usually brighter pictures and they cause less eye strain (as long as you don't use them on full brightness) so they are easier to use for extended periods.

CRTs respond quicker than the fastest TFTs, they can generally do deeper black colours, they have perfect viewing angles, and they look equally sharp in all their resolutions, whereas a TFT should really be used in it's native resolution. They can generally do higher refresh rates as well.

Both are a bit of a compromise, I actually have both next to each other and switch depending on what I'm doing - gaming on the CRT, web browsing on the TFT. Can't wait for SED so I can have one screen that uses little desk space, little power, yet responds quick, has good black depth and perfect viewing angles

As far as if it is worth throwing away your CRT for a TFT, probably not. If your happy with the CRT then there isn't any point switching, TFTs are not just "better", but if any of those advantages mentioned above is a big issue for you then perhaps so. In the same way if any of those disadvantages sounds an alarm, then you'll need to keep that in mind too.

If you mostly game then I'd definately not make the switch for the sake of it, same if you need the decent viewing angles / colours. You'll also be locked to a certain resolution for optimum use (which can put extra strain on your system in demanding games performance wise, particularly the graphics card), CRTs have no such limits.

1 the space CRT take up.

2 They look ugly.

3 There old

4 TFT's are really cheap now anyways its not like there 100's of pounds anymore

:)

does anyone know how long it will be before these sed's (or whatever someone called them) come out and how much will they cost? :D
also i was looking at dell computers and wondered why they sell their comps with tft monitors, it must take a larger cut from their budget than if they sold the comps with crt monitors, so why do they do it?

I can't go from my 22" Lacie monitor to a LCD, TFT or plasma. The colours are spot on, smooth scrolling down pages and no ghosting, I do how ever notice the flicker at 100hz when concentrating in photoshop.

My brother and Dad use LCD's and are jealose of my monitor. Niether of them have the space for one though.

I will be really sad when this monitor finally gives up and dies. :(
