The word(?) 'PC' has two different meanings, one is personal computer, the other is talking about the 'IBM Compatible PC' which for many years now has just been known as a PC. It's quite obvious which meaning is being referred to in this thread.
The term 'IBM PC compatible' is not commonly used for current computers because all the mainstream computers are based on the PC architecture. One notable exception was Apple Macintosh computers, which used the PowerPC architecture until 2006, when Apple adopted the Intel x86 architecture as used in the PC.
i've got windows 7 and osx dual boots on booth my macbook and my pc desktop
macs are expensive because they are a high quality product with a good name and reputation. you could quite easily throw osx on your boggo home build box like i have or go the other way and stick windows on your mac. as alredy stated your paying for the quality of product and the name.
and yes my next purchase will be a multi CPU mac desktop
because that is part of how they get away with charging a premium for their hardware - some people like OSX and are prepared to pay a few hundred quid more for it...
The opposite is true, that Apple are shooting themselves in the foot by not licensing it. They lose far more money by not having it available for 'PCs'.
The fact is they take the risk on their products being good enough that people will buy them on merit over a Windows unit.
Windows fans will tell you it's because apple want to restrict the market and make as much money as possible
Mac fans will tell you it's so reliability is improved (consequence of reduced hardware spectrum to support etc) and the user gets a ready to go package of hardware and software.
Truth is somewhere in between in you're impartial.
Apple would rather take a risk and push their OP out on their own products (which sell very well) rather then risking it in the OP market against Windows.
It's also cheaper to only offer support for "apple" products, i,e not home made computers with OSX on.

FFS!!! if you dont like the price/fact that you cant mod then dont buy one!! dont whinge about it, the reason they cost is because they are built so much better when compared to a POS Dell. My macbook has lasted for 2 years and has been abused, my last dell laptop barely held out for 6 months.
If you dont like the price dont buy one and stop trolling!!

I dont think theyre losing money since if you want the OS, youre forking out at a starting price of £900 for basic Apple set up, theyre making more than profit there.
