If you are a serious gamer, then the Wii needs to fail..

Currently it's at the top of the next gen. Nintendo's shares have soared, the thing is a massive hit. It's brought Nintendo back into the non-portable console market. BUT the thing is it's a last gen machine that has a few fancy tricks up its sleeve.. Namely the nunchuk and a few innovative games. Nothing more !

What does this mean to us the serious gamer? Well going by what nintendo has done, then why should Sony or Microsoft bother taking technology further for their next console. They'll think lets save millions in R&D and just slap on a few innovative gadgets and market the thing like it's the next best thing since sliced bread.

Since gaming began, I've always been excited at the new technology and what its brought into gaming. Namely graphical prowness. I think the Wii is bad for the gamer. If it's a commercial success, then others will follow in its trail, and the next gen machines will not cost as much at the sacrifice of the latest techology.

Don't get me wrong. I love games and gaming, and hats off to Nintendo.. But my opnion is if it's marketed as next gen, then that is exactly what it should be. My worry is that next gen will no longer be something to get excited about.

I can't say I agree. I think the Nintendo has found a new market for video games and is doing very well from it. As long as there are 'serious' gamers, there is a market and someone (Sony or Microsoft) will continue to develop for it.

I'd be more worried about Microsoft leaving the market because of the mess they made with the hardware.

What do you mean advancing technology forward? The 360 is pretty much a pc isn't it? No matter how advanced a console is, it's not the edge of latest technology

Nintendo has created its own market with people now playing games that has never done it before, there for they are getting NEW customer rather than relying on it already established user base like Sony have done and that hasn't done them any favours.

Also this will now challenge the big 3 to come up with new idea's not just stick a faster chip set in a box that will play games the exact same way it did last gen.

Sorry to pick on sony but i find the dual shock, the design and shape totally out classed by the other 2 controllers (the comfortable shape of the 360 and the comfortable shape and excellent controlling wiimote)

At the end of the day the games market will not survive with out growth and with out new ideas, the Wii has done both and it is well deserved of the success it is having.

Actually, I think encouraging the companies to think of new, original and fun ways of gaming is a good thing.

The constant focus on graphics in recent years has led to some very nice looking but shallow games.

New technology isn't just about graphics though is it. If you've always been excited at new technology you should be excited at what the Wii has brought. And thus what there is to look forward to in the next generation. If such a console as the Wii had even 3/4 the processing power of the PS3 then I'd still imagine it would be cheaper than the PS3, and would still sell by the bucketload. I'm also sure that it wouldn't be that much more expensive for Sony and Microsoft to implement similar innovations into their next generation consoles. And what's not to say that with booming profits, Nintendo won't have more muscle in the next generation to build something even more powerful that keeps up with Sony/Microsoft?

repeat after me,

graphics do not make a game good.

Exactly right, I still remember when the origional Worms came out. That game gave me and my friends so many hours of fun yet the graphics could not have been any more basic.

While it is nice that technology moves on in terms of graphics I do not believe that they have an effect on gameplay at all, a game can have a great story and suck you in without fancy graphics.

How can you call yourself a serious gamer without playing the best games that Nintendo have to offer on the Wii?

You may consider yourself a serious gamer but you are not

actually i had one and sold it cos i couldn't stomach the graphics.. sad i know, but i want to see something that blows me away when i go next gen and that the Wii isn't.

Yes I know gfx doesn't make a game. So why don't we all stick to PS2's.... and the original xbox's.

Why would you want anyone to fail? It makes the other company's try that little bit harder to get sales. It can only be good for gamers the more competition there is surely?

I agree with most people here, I sold all my consoles (original xbox, ps2 and gamecube) not long after I built my 1st gaming pc and havent considered another console since. Until the Wii came along which has grabbed my attention not for its amazing graphics (why do i need that when I have a pc) but its great gameplay and interactivity. I suppose you could class me as a new customer aswell since I no longer play consoles so I think Nintendo have got it just right and most of these comments are spot on.
