Why Windows 10 and DirectX 12 Represent a Big Step Forward for Gaming

there is talk of win 7 getting dx12. hopefully this happens. win 10 is dire.

There is no talk of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 getting DX12. Well, not from Microsoft. There's no incentive for them to do it. Why rewrite a 6 year old OS to appease a few luddites?

dx12 will be win 10 only.
all the other OS are EOL now.
Update and change to windows 10 is the way to go.

Am really looking forward to what a true dx12 and amd hardware can pull off.. Xbox One and amd GPUs one to one platform I expect nice performance.

Exactly.

No disrespect to those holding out, but I find it weird that you can have an interest in GPUs strong enough to bring you here, but not want to try the latest version of Windows. I'd have thought the two things appealed to mostly the same group of people.

I've tried Win 10 - got it running in a VM on my main PC and on a test PC - too many things I don't like about it - which is a shame as I really like the idea on paper but the execution has too many hang ups for me.

I'll probably end up reluctantly dual booting at some point down the line for DX12 unless they polish things up UI wise hugely. (EDIT: And do away with forced updates (even though its probably "workaroundable").

Considering they back ported DX11 to Vista (after modders had already done it lol) I fully expect DX12 to show up on 8.x but not sure about 7.

With windows 10 being a free upgrade I cant see the point of sticking with 7(or 8).

Long story short, with W8 they were trying to make the best OS they could, with W10 they are trying to make the best received OS they can. As a result the are a lot of improvements however the are also a lot of things that are quite simply worse, many changes are quite frankly a step backwards. As a result of this the overall experience is not that much improved and for some people it may even be worse if they have lost more than they have gained.

I am running W10 on my laptop but it won't be going near my desktop unless some changes/improvements are made.

Roll on Windows 10.1

Windows 10 is for people that liked bits of 8 but didn't want to go all the way 8.

Some of us remember Millennium and Vista, 8.. Well we know not to bend over for just any operating system that comes along. That being said I'd heard a fairly positive response about it and I was bored so just went for it. It's okay, needs a lot of fiddling to turn off all the useless crap, I'm not really used to the layout yet but overall it's something new to play with. There's really no need to upgrade for at least 6 months, especially if you value stability. I get sound and video dropouts for instance, only last a second but tolerable to me.

upgraded from 8.1 which i began to love to 10. Must say in general now i prefer 10 with a lot of silly little things.

The thing with a new O/S it takes a while before you begin to truly get to grips with whats new and use it in your daily operation.

People that upgrade use it for 10 mins a day or even a week really havent given it a fair crack of the whip.

It takes time to find the benefits and the things you disliked sometimes become the things you like or at least don't bother you..

This was the case for me with windows 8.

People that are just waiting for a few updates fair enough cant say i have had any issues but I am sure there are barrel loads of them for windows 10.

Eventually though you will all have to upgrade if you want to use the latest and the greatest. Or you'll just end up like a lot of XP users.

Was it just a rumor or is the Ashes of the Singularity demo coming out on the 13th of this month? That will be the first true dx12 benchmark.

I'm very interested to see what DX12 brings to the table. I no it will never happen but would love to see it go open source spread across all platforms

Still waiting for Fable Legends beta to run on DirectX 12.

Wccftech released footage of Fable Legends running on DirectX 12.

Looked stunning. :)

Would be interesting to see how well it run on Skylake iGPU.

How many games were purely still only using DX9 features after DX10(subsequently removed)/11 came out?

So unless Microsoft wants to force other developers to use DX12 only, I'd stop wearing those rose-tinted glasses.
