In case anyone is as slow as me and finds themself in the same situation, I resolved this by using a HDMI<--->DVI cable (minimal cost) to make many more monitors available to me, not just those with HDMI-in.
Totally Different, the only similarity is the D shaped outer. Neither will work with each other as they are totally different technologies.
. A serial port is a legacy connection which allows communication and control one at a time. It used to be used for modems. Very rarely usedd these days. It only has 9 pins.
VGA however, is used for outputting video to monitors and other devices. It has 15 pins.
