Why?

I haven't had this happen to my Lightning cable yet, but had it happen to multiple of the old 30Pin ones.

Did you miss the bit about the class action lawsuit?

S'ok boys. We can ignore the class action suit. Matt100 never experienced any problems ergo problems don't exist.

Wow you're a charmer aren't you?

I ignored the magsafe reference because its irrelevant.

Apple probably have dozens of cable manufacturing facilities/partners so thats about as related to a damaged lightning cable as the plug that goes into my TV.

In addition it's completely obvious that the OP has been swinging off that cable for it to end up like that, and not that I added it in my post but I do have a pretty good idea about this sort of thing as I compete against apple in this space and I would have had rather more success if retailers were having any meaningful returns on lightning, they're not.

Its pretty simple, the OP has damaged the cable. Especially seeing as it's every charger he's had.

For the record every time I've seen a class action lawsuit it's normally been around the kind of issue that could well be user error but they've managed to get enough morons to complain simultaneously that the company needs to make the bad PR go away, it doesn't change the fact its often about something any normal person could have avoided by using their brain (I put my hand in this boiling kettle and I got burned, give me money etc).

For the avoidance of doubt I'm not saying things occasionally come off any production line faulty but I'm saying it's nowhere near epidemic or systemic.

I agree, but as it clearly is a problem then perhaps it's best to be a bit more careful, even if you shouldn't have to be.

It is not about care, there is something wrong in design or manufacture.

My wife has had 4 ruined iphone 5 connectors now, to the point we bought docks so the cable removal issue is excluded. She never removes via pulling the cable, always with finger pressure on the harder white segment.

They simply don't last. Out ipad 2 connectors and previous iphone connectors all work perfectly fine since bought, how many years is that with ipad2? or iphone3gs, several incarnations anyway, never an issue.

The iphone 5 lightning connectors are terrible, I haven't cut them open, but I bet inside they have separated in exactly the way the OPs picture demonstrates.

But as Blow Jobs said when the iphone aerial reception issue was announced, 'Don't hold it like that!'

This has just started to happen to one of my charger cables from years ago - but never had it happen after a few months use...

I have two original Apple cables from when the 5 launched over a year ago, they are both still fine and get used regularly. I have two MagSafe chargers for my laptop that are 3 and 4 years old respectively and they too are perfect.

No idea how you've done that, never had a problem wit an apple cable here and never had a friend comment on them either. I suspect user error if you've killed that many, I can also never understand why someone would carry a cable like this to and from work every day the cost nothing on ebay and it's so much easier having one at both locations and one in the car you never need to worry about forgetting them!

I worked at an Apple repair centre very briefly whilst I was looking for a better job and I used at least 50 chargers, 10 times a day, every day for about 4 weeks. Doing the maths, I've basically unplugged/plugged around 10000 different phones and never had a problem with the chargers or the cables, and we took these from the same place they are sent out with phones.

I really really struggle to see how so many people can **** up so many chargers! :p

Only ones I've had a problem with are the non-official ones, but the price you can't really complain.

Even at the other end it's starting to go

Do you use the device attached to the charger much? Thats all I can think it is, I never use mine whilst they're charging purely because its annoying and I'm in a pattern of charging overnight.

Yea If my phone is plugged into work at my desk I'll use it then put it down, I think it's using it and putting the phone face down, then face up, then face down, etc.. Slowly just making the cable twist.

I wouldn't pull on the cable, even if it did have a cable relief.

Do you speed because your car also has seat belts? No.

I have had an iPhone since 2007, 2 iPads, an iPod Classic.

The number of cables that has is remotely close to tear/break/fail.

Zero, ziltch, nada.

What do you guys do to them?!

I had a magsafe one do this after about 2 and a half years... it does get abused somewhat, I suppose.

Not winding them up in a coil or wrapping the cable round the plug when you chuck them in your bag or whatever are you?

Nah, just putting it into the bag. I honestly think it's using the phone whilst plugged in at work. Face up, face down, face up so on and so forth and twisting the whole cable.

The only one I've broken is because I always used to shove it into my jean pockets. Never had a problem since I stopped doing that :p

I keep a spare cable at work so I don't have to carry one around but when I do I'll always unplug it from the charger so that the cable doesn't get kinked.
