Hi all i have a 5d3 with only a 50mm nifty fifty and a 70-200 f2.8 and looking to get something wider.

my choices are 24mm L, 35mmL or a 16-35L. i would love a 24-70 mk2 but its out of my price range.

budget £1100.

Open for more suggestions. it will be used for this:

Landscape
Group indoor shots of people

What things i would like:

  • Weather sealing
  • Fast AF.
  • Fantastic Bokah
  • Brilliant in low light(F2.8 stop minimum).
  • Built like a tank

This will save me from potentially carrying two cameras with me(my old 400d with a 17-50 tamron)

From what I gather the 16-35 doesn't tend to be worth it over the 17-40 unless you particularly need that extra stop.

There were rumours of a canon 14-24, but they don't seem to have materialised which is a bit of a pain. I also suspect it would be out of budget.

If you're considering the 35 1.4L I'd look at the new Sigma 35 1.4 as well. A little cheaper, a lot newer, sharper etc. and overall a brilliant lens. It's missing weather sealing but that's about the only thing that you can fault it on.

You shouldn't really be looking for bokeh in a landscape lens but fair enough.

My recommendation would be a 17-40 for landscapes and the Sigma 35 1.4 for the indoor portraiture and general use.

I'd probably need the extra stop for indoor shooting of groups of people.

for straight landscape i wont need it :)

The sigma looks nice but aint the max f stop 11?

For landscape, a higher F stop number is very useful

f/8 and be there. Like I said, get a 17-40 for landscapes they're cheap anyway.

The 35 1.4 stops down to f/16 btw. You shouldn't be stopping down further than that for anything other than macro - which you wouldn't use the 35 for.

If you want a fantastic 14-24mm on crop then most serious pros buy the Nikon and an adapter. Yes you have to manually. Focus for that tends not to be a problem for such a lens on FF.

For indoors, like I said, get the 35 1.4. Get the 17-40 for landscapes and the 35 1.4 for indoor work and as a general lens.

Your budget is £1100
35 1.4 is £600 on grey import, £700 and a bit on UK models
17-40 is £500 grey import, £550 on UK, c £450 second hand depending on condition

That can be as little as £1050, and I've seen 17-40s go for a lot less than £500 on forums rather than second hand websites

35mm isn't wide enough for indoors and not wide for landscape... I'd go for the 24 if you want a prime...
I have the 17-40L on my 5D mk1.... turned out to be one of my most used lenses... Bargain used. Try that first and see how you get on with it.

Canon's 35 1.4L isn't weather sealed either :p

Both can be used in light rain though, well I had no trouble with the Sigma.

The 35 is fine for landscapes, hell I used the 50 1.4 for landscapes so the 35 is definitely ok! Wider gives better perspective though and for this reason I still use the 17-40.

... I get by fine with my 50, heck I've used my 85 indoors... I'm not really sure what you mean but 35 is certainly wide enough, without being so ridiculously wide that nothing looks real or to get anything closer than a 3/4 body shot you end up with really bad perspective distortion.

Cool thanks.

What about a zeiss 21mm? people say that lens just beats any of the canon offerings hands down! Only issue is that it is MF.

I could get this for my 5d3 http://www.focusingscreen.com/

...Bathrooms. 24mm isn't wide enough for bathrooms.

I'm on FF as well, like I said 35 is perfect for group shots and a lovely length for portraiture. The 17-40 will cover you for pretty much all landscapes.
