Wii: Graphics quality and FPS....

Hello out there in OCUKland :) I wonder if anyone could help me out with a quick question......

I've just treated myself to a Wii console which I've got connected up to a Sony Bravia 32" LCD via a component cable and therefore is running at 480p. Very, very pleased with it so far and loving the tennis and boxing (as is Mrs Clanger...) and clearly it's really suited to "cartoony" graphics.

Now.....I've never owned a console before (dedicated PC gamer for more years than I care to remember) and I wondered what a FPS-type game would look and play like. The nice man in Gamestation recommended Red Steel - which I therefore bought (second hand copy thankfully). Having played it for a couple of hours I have to say I have mixed views - controls are fine and were easy to get the hang of - however, the graphics are somewhat murky and it's often only possible to spot your enemies by letting them shoot at you and sighting on their muzzle flash.

So, my question is to those of you who know is, are the graphics for Red Steel "state of the art" for the Wii (in which case I'll stick to the cartoony games ;) ) or are there better games out there?

All replies gratefully received!

Cheers!

Doubt it will produce anything significantly better. Wii is a bit underpowered in the graphics department these days im afraid

In theory they should be able to produce better looking games once they get the max out of the hardware.

However there wont be any significant improvement since the Wii really wasn't designed to be able to display high quality graphics. Look at Xbox titles for what the graphics could resemble.

Mario Galaxy looks good though and I would imagine that Nintendo could push the hardware a little more than other developers with their 'cartoon' graphics

The Wii still hasn't had any proper games developed for it, they were all rush jobs or GC conversions. Current Wii games look worse than GC games and since nintendo, who always understate these things, state it's about 1.5 time the power of the GC I'm sure future games will look nice. Just look at Resi 4, Zelda TP, Rogue Squadron, smash bros melee and Metroid prime to see what the GC could do. Times that by 1.5 and I'd have no complaints :)

Red steel is by no means a measure of Wii's graphics and I would say it's almost criminal for the guy in the shop to recomend such a poorly recieved game.
There are already better looking games on the system and better is to come. Although dont expect it to compete with the other consoles for pure gfx horsepower.

hey check out these videos looks like it will be good

Metroid Prime 3

looks pretty good, not pc Fps quality but good I was a 100% pc gamer and have been for last 10 years and bit of a graphics whore but i am enjoying the wii so far

I am liking zelda , bit rough around edges but some bits are really good. excellent game..

so true wii haven't seen the best of this console not by a long shot

(sorry for pun I couldn't resist :) )

Thanks all for the replies and comments. I'm pleased to hear that Red Steel isn't the limit of the Wii's capabilities and I'll keep an eye out for Metroid Prime 3. Dreadful pun by the way LabR@t ;) As Queen Victoria would have said - "Wii are not amused". :D

Cheers!

M8 Get Resident Evil 4, i promise you will not be disapointed,it offers the best visuals for the wii at the moment, its in 16:9 and has full native support for 480p unlike the Gamecube version. Im loving this game.

It really is worth picking up ;)

godfather blackhand edition :)

best bit of violence on a games console till manhunt appears on the wii

i personally think that the wii's graphics on serious looking games, not cartoony ones will end up like a high end 2004 pc game on max, such as half life 2, doom 3 or far cry. They all still look fantastic today running maxed out, just a little behind the other next gen consoles, which i reckon its gonna be.

I'm not sure that we'll see Doom 3 or HL2 high end graphics on the Wii, although I've very sure we'll see much better than what we have currently. If you look at the graphics on Smash Bros Melee, MP3 or Mario Galaxy, you'll see a great deal of effects that the GC was just not capable of - certainly not at a good FPS rate.

I think Rogue Squadron looks better than a good percentage of the current Wii games, and that was a launch title. I don't even think that we've seen GC conversions to the Wii... more like PS2!

Hmmm.....I seem to remember that Gamestation have a 10 day return policy - so I think I may well be returning Red Steel and picking up Resident Evil instead ;)

OOO do it! The controls are just awesome and lend it so well to the game!

Really enjoying my copy so far!

Just because you ain't seen them in those games Don't mean it can't do it. Give them time, to fully exploit the hardware.

Didnt the makers of Red Steel issue a public apology and say they rushed the release as they wanted to hit launch? They promised to do better in Red Steel 2

Still a great game though I am gonna get resi as well :)
