Just hours before Microsoft’s E3 Press Conference, Nintendo has announced “WiiMotionPlus”.

From the press release:

Nintendo’s upcoming Wii MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary Wii Remote controller again redefines game control, by more quickly and accurately reflecting motions in a 3-D space. The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player’s arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play. The Wii MotionPlus accessory reconfirms Nintendo’s commitment to making games intuitive and accessible for everyone. Nintendo will reveal more details about the Wii MotionPlus accessory and other topics Tuesday morning at its E3 media briefing.

Blatantly announced it ahead of MS conference to try and steal any motion thunder.

I'm interested in WTF this does though.

probably cost too much at the time the wii was being designed, and was an added risk given it wasn't needed at the time for launch games.

I'm guessing nintendo have decided it's feasible to add it as an "extra" for games that will need it now the wii has been a success and there is a possible market for the added precision.

1:1 motion means any movement in the controller is mapped exactly into the game as it is. The current accelerometer in the remote just works by a basic "he's swinging the remote by this much in this general direction"*, and that is then mapped onto the game. The trouble with this is that it has no real idea of its overall position in the world, unless it's pointing directly at the sensor bar. That's why we haven't seen any real sign of the amazing lightsaber/sword games everyone was expecting.

It'll be interesting to see what technology they're using in this though. Will it just be more accelerometers, or something else?

*And, with a single accelerometer, it can be difficult to judge the difference between being moved in one direction, and just the basic force of gravity already acting on it.

EDIT: Yeah, the golf in Wii Sports is a good example actually. If you play it long enough, you notice that there is very little subtlety in it, and it doesn't really detect the contact or movement of the club. It's more simply what speed are you swinging it at when it passes the bottom point.

Can't really say yet. If it's just an attachment for the remote then no, because the Wii will still have no idea how big your TV actually is. For all we know, it might come with something you put on your TV though.

If it's true that 1:1 motion has finally been achieved, I might start to regret selling my Wii if the software truly matches it. It's what the Wii needs to continue to catch large swathes of new users.

~It would be great if they co announce this with a new Zelda title.

but why announce something that big (if true) before the MS press conference. cant wait for miyamoto to get up on stage and announce something big :D

edit: Anyone else thinking Star Wars = More greatness with this addon :D?

At IGN they mentioned they should use this in the upcoming Clone Wars game (which looks pretty good). It obviously depends on the game, but it seems like it would unbalance the controller. I'm guessing it wouldn't be needed for a game where you'd hold the pad sideways anyway. I'm sure we'll see a Wiimote 2 which'll look no different to the existing one, with this to suit all the existing Wii owners. Bit like the Dualshock 3, without the rumble pack.

The added weight at the end could be a bonus tho as it will make the swinging motion feel a lot more natural, like the weight in the hilt of a sword.

I bet its on conjunction with a big 3rd party title, nintendos big game will be pikmin
