Wii price confirmed!

Nintendo are still in the game in mid 2006, I can remember buying my NES from a store that was knocked down years ago, Nintendo built a very big and quiet fan base.

Unlikely. The $129 US Nintendo DS price got translated to £99 over here.

Judging by that conversion rate, the Wii will cost ~£190 inc. VAT. That's still less than half the price of the PS3 though!

Conversion rates dont work like that, it isnt x amount - 30 is so many £ per $.

Can't compete with Sony and Microsoft in terms of powerful consoles? You don't seem to know much... Nintendo have around $8 billion in cash in the bank, and they made more profit than the whole of Sony last year IIRC. They're not going anywhere anytime soon. ;)

Nintendo - Revenue $4.35 billion
Microsoft - Revenue $42.64 billion
Sony - Revenue $63.89 billion

So nintendo are a way off.

Ah but how much of Microsoft and Sony's revenue is actually profit?

Microsoft is $13.47 billion net income, dont have the figures for the others. Sony is probably less because it has more than 2.5x as many employees.

But if memory serves Nintendo make a massive profit compared to sony, it's something like 10% of their turnover, compared to something like 2% for Sony, so despite Sony being 20x larger they are only making about 2-3 times as much and have much higher operating costs and risks.

When it comes down to it, a big company with a lot of turnover but little profit (comparatively speaking) tends to be more vunerable to changes in the market than a smaller one with a large profit margin.

Also what seems to be forgotten is that nintendo is only in the gaming market, they dont make TV's or office software

yayyyyyyy another massive exaggeration

the first gen DS's wherent exactly superstrong by any means. Never had any problem with my psp, or any ones I have seen personally......

My PSP broke to easy dam junk. :(

much of the anti (ish) Nintendo comments on this thread were said about the Nintendo DS v PSP, read back and almost everyone including myself thought the PSP would totally wipe the floor with the DS as a form of entertainment, but isnt the DS now out selling the PSP by 3-1 or something silly ? so kids dont like Mario right? :p My PSP collected dust and was sold, was a great novelty whilst it lasted though, cant deny that.

I think Nintendo are aiming to provide us adults (and the current crop of non gamers) with a toy (nothing wrong with toys for adults is there ), not trying to provide kids with grown up games and the endless sequals.

Sadly, the way Nintendo are perceived in the UK is down to the machos and Egos of the people with the most disposable income, Nintendo will never get that.
Even if todays 9 - 20 somethings dont get Nintendo, I'd like to see a whole load of non gamers attracted to the Wii.

Oh and I think we should look first at the likely price of the Wii in Euros to calculate our small island £ price, so how does €199 sound ? (£140) I cant see €209 or €229 myself.

Not quite true, they also make a fair bit of money from their entertainment divisions etc, of which Pokemon is probably the most obvious offshoot (I beleive Nintendo own all the rights to the Pokemon merchandise and TV series).

I am hanging onto my psp to watch tv on when its finally available, and also to use as a controller for the PS3, to name two things that as yet the other consoles cant do in any way (unless I am mistaken)

While I agree the PSP initially was brilliant, I think its become too expensive as a sole product, but when its big brother comes out I think there will be more joint innovation which might cause a PSP2 to be developed etc etc

Just a hunch mind you

I know people have talked about the psp being used as a controller, but I don't think I've seen anyone ever confirming that it will do that. I know it will allow extra features like the GBA + Gamecube did (seen the demo of it being used as a rearview mirror), but not as an actual controller.

You could watch TV on a Game Gear :p (if you wanna be retro). You should soon be able to watch digital tv on the DS aswell.

fair enough I hadnt heard about the ds, but its looking promising - wonder why they havent released it yet as that announcement was in feb.

Anyway it looks good, the more competition there is the better the market will become

Revenue doesn't really mean much. Microsoft make many times more than either Sony or Nintendo, yet have a smaller revenue than Sony.

http://news.com.com/Nintendo+annual+profit+down/2100-1043_3-6076728.html?tag=nl
(net profit for Nintendo for the last financial year: $873 million)

The figures are so close as to be basically identical, because once you factor in exchange rates on different days it gets a little inaccurate. So whilst the companies are different sizes in terms of revenue, Nintendo still make a lot of money and as such if they wanted to, could have matched Sony or Microsoft in terms of pure computing power in the console. I don't get why people are trying to imply that Nintendo having a less powerful console (in computing terms) is an accident or was unintended on their part.

With the price and the controller I'm definately getting one. Can't wait for the Star Wars games on the Wii that use the controller for lightsaber duels.

I read 6 to one a few weeks back.

The launch DS's were very tough and there were no mass flaws. Some people are speaking out of their nether regions.
