Will a SATA II drive work with a SATA I mobo.

Yes, as long as you are sure the drive is set to SATA1 speeds. I'm posting this on a rig with SATA1 on the mobo with a Seagate 7200.10 320 GiB disk. On the Seagate the drive comes from the factory with the jumper on the back set to SATA1. Removing it enables SATA2 speeds.

Ok cheers, can this drive can be set to either speed?

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 80GB ST380815AS SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM

Also is this a good drive?

I haven't read anything about that specific drive so I can only comment on the product line as a whole. I'm very impressed with my 7200.10. It's quiet and fast, everything I want out of a hard disk. Mine has a 16 MiB cache while that has half that. I reckon it won't make too much of a difference in the end.

TBH it is just for mums machine for office and Internet use so should not make that much of a difference, the machine has a fresh install of windows and is reallllllly slow. I think the old 20g 5200rpm maxtor ATA 100 is to blame, we shall see. :)

Read the SATA-II sticky at the top of the forum, if you have any queries. ;)

The 7200.10's are good drives and would be just fine for that use. When talking about a drive for general surfing etc, there is no difference between brands. It's only when dealing with higher end uses that this becomes a factor.

Indeed, the sticky answers all your questions. As for SATA-II, well it doesn't really exist to be honest and just serves to create the confusion and questions that you're asking :)
