Will DX12 Lift an FX8350 past a 4690k?

Just wondering

I bought a 4690k to replace the FX8350 in my 2nd machine but now I am not so sure

I love AMD and would rather stick with them but the games I usually play such as World of Warcraft, Eve Online & the upcoming Total War Warhammer tend to deliver better on Intel variants

Do you think that DX12 will help in these games

Thanks for looking and replying

I don't think the game developers will even bother updating those games to DX12. WoW and Eve prefer stronger IPC instead of cores, and will probably stay that way unless they find a strong majority of their players with systems that supports DX12.

The GPU will still be the bottleneck, so at best you'll get closer/similar performance between the two I would have thought.

Internet connection makes a difference in those online games too. DX12 wont 'lift' the CPU but it will enable the FX to keep its head above the water in those games that can.

Real evidence was out there when systems running the mantle API played a game with smoother graphs (CPU/GPU) and better minimums. In these circumstances the CPU's all seem to perform similar whether it was an FX, i5 or i7 making a good case that if your not using multi-gpu's buy the best GPU and not worry so much about the CPU.

At 4k I saw no difference in FPS over using either an 8 core Intel @ 2ghz or my 3970x @ 4.7.

Seriously, it was all about the GPUs. Wish I'd tested my 8320 @ 4k now :S

I was hoping my FX CPU's would last until Zen but unless DX12 lifts performance then it will be a long 18 months

DX12 will be in 1 or 2 token games when Zen comes out.

What do people think is going to happen when DX12 launches? Overnight all games will magically be re-programmed and 50% faster?

That's my point exactly, even when DX12 comes out, it doesn't mean every developer will update their games to DX12 as well as every customer upgrading to DX12 compatible hardware. In fact, I believe Blizzard skipped DX10 due to lack of hardware support, and didn't update to DX11 until a year after DX11 was released with Windows 7. Searching around EVE only started experiementing with DX11 nearly 2 years ago. And nothing solid yet about TW:WH supporting DX12 either. By the time DX12 becomes more supported in games, AMD Zen will be out and probably its successor.

This is one of the reasons why I laughed after all the intel/nvidia die hards ripped the back out of mantle and stuck their fingers up when they heard about DX12.

The savvy users here knew DX12 was months if not years behind the counter statement back then. Its a shame mantle didn't get more momentum and game support as it would be in current games starting to make headway. Obviously it was a pipedream as it would only be AMD cards that utilised it, but look how long you have to wait to even begin to see Microsofts flavour and then some more till it is properly used/supported..

DX12 being mainstream seems years off to me especially as most games will be disigned from the ground up to work on the consoles.

I am going to rock an i5 750 for the forseeable future.

Very very few currently released games will be implemented on DX12, its too much work.

DX12 will give the higher core count CPUs a decent boost relative to the higher performance 4 cores, this also applies to the hex core Xeons.

As already mentioned, its largely irrelevant anyway, its all about GPU performance these days, and that's only going to be become more pronounced.

Adoption for DX12 should be faster than any DX adoption to date. Within a year all AAA+ games should be released on DX12 or Vulcan, Games are already in production that will be released on multithreaded Low level APIs. Some games will also port over to DX12 but emphasis on "some" Games often used for benchmarking and popular have a good chance of being converted. Most older games won't be ported as having DX12 in a new package sells more products, so rather than a port expect remakes perhaps.

Really depends on the games you play. High user area MMO's, strategy games etc, use A LOT of cpu power.
