Evenin' all.

I bought a second hand 2001 Renault Megane Coupe 1.6 about a month ago and I've noticed that it shakes (judders) quite a bit. When I'm driving the gear stick shakes, doesn't change gears - just shakes a bit and I was wondering if you think it would fail MOT?

Don't think they test that on the MOT but if they can't drive it into the workshop or up the ramp they may look at it closer?

Not something that specifically appears on the MOT though as far as I remember.

I know this is a bit difficult to answer, but how does it shake? It could be excessive engine movement due to failed/failing engine mounts, could be a misfire issue meaning it isnt running on all cylinders etc etc. Does the engine sound ok? It doesn't take a trained ear to tell if it is running on all four cylinders!

On the very little information given i'd also guess engine mounts. Best way to tell if its that is to give it full throttle then lift off while driving and if the gearstick moves a lot or u hear bangs from the engine bay chances are its a mount thats gone. An engine/gearbox mount being worn/defective isn't a reason for a failure though.

Thanks all for the replies. I'll take it to a garage to get it looked at, I just hope it's not the drive shaft as that'll prob cost a fortune to fix :(

DRZ: When I start the engine and am just sitting in the car not doing anything, it just feels like the car is moving if that makes sense? I don't think the engine sounds as it should so I'll get it checked.

Rear engine mount, very common as they seem to be made from cheese. Popular upgrade is to replace it with one from a Clio 172. Engine wise, pencil coils are a favourite failure point too.

Because you may not know when a service was last carried out? Seems pretty obvious to me

No you service a car in accordance with the manufacturers guidance, not arbitrarily when it is going for an MOT

The implication was that an oil change would somehow help pass the mot

Get a minor service done and it'll be checked over...highlighting any possible problems before it goes for MOT...

Most 'minor' services at garages are nothing more than an oil and filter change.

Not sure how this will help you pass an MOT. A service aids in the running and maintenance of the car (mostly of the engine). An MOT is to make sure the entire car is safe and roadworthy.
