Will this CPU increase performance ?

I recently got a GTX 680 as an upgrade from a 6970 and haven't really noticed any performance increase on the two games i play the most, iracing and arma... presumably because these sims rely on CPU more than GPU.

So I'm thinking i should upgrade my CPU/Motherboard

I currently have

Intel Core i5-2400 3.10GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor
Gigabyte H67M-UD2H-B3 Intel H67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION **

Im looking at getting this to upgrade my system

Would this offer a substantial performance increase over my current cpu/mobo combo ?

ok cheers for the suggestion, although I've never over clocked anything in my life and find the prospect of doing so quite daunting !

also, just how much of a performance increase will i get compared to my current setup ? will it be quite substantial ?

one other thing, is there any CPU out there which can fit into my current motherboard which will give me a big boost in performance ? im pretty sure i cant overclock with my current motherboard so bare that in mind... it would have to be at stock ghz.

Your motherboard supports the new Ivy Bridge CPU's so why not just swap the CPU to a 3570k?

will the 3.5ghz 3570k give me a noticeable boost in performance ? its only got a higher clock speed by 0.4ghz. makes me wonder if its worth it ? im looking for a hefty performance increase hence why the overclocked cpu at 4.4ghz appealed to me.

as far as im aware i cant overclock with my current motherboard so would be stuck at stock speeds.

It will give a boost in performance but how much is hard to say, The 3570k is about 10% faster than the 2500k at stock speeds and the 2500k is about 12% faster than the 2400 at stock speeds so @ 20-22% increase should be noticeable but more importantly if you find it is enough then you have saved on the new motherboard but if it is not enough you can just buy the motherboard and are no worse off. Unless the games you play support 6 core multi-threading then you won't find a faster CPU than Ivy Bridge

Ok thanks, so would this be the one to get ? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-404-IN

If it doesn't offer enough performance increase can i overclock it at a later date so long as i get a new motherboard which allows overclocking ? if so what would be the max speed i could overclock this cpu too ?

sorry for all the questions :p

FYI - clock speed is only 1 indicator of performance. There are more...

Yes that is the one to get and yes you can overclock it with the right motherboard. You should easily be able to get it to 4.4Ghz and most likely 4.6Ghz. The Z77-D3H is a good board for the money if you are short on cash or the Z77x-UD3H is good value and better for overclocking if you can swing it.

ok cool, and the final question...

how easy is it to overclock ? im literally king spazmo when it comes to technical stuff like this. I have never overclocked anything or even touched or dared to look at a BIOS screen.

Thats the main reason the pre overclocked bundle in my OP caught my eye, saves me the hassle of having to do it myself !

I don't know if the z77-d3h does it but the Z77X-UD3H has an overclocking utility called Easytune which will automatically overclock for you and it does a fair job so if it comes down to it just one click of a button.

It's not as simple as that.
If the system has a big lock up for any reason sometimes it can disable the overclock. Also if you need to reset the cmos for any reason or update the bios at a later date this will reset the overclock. If you buy a pre-overclocked system there is a good chance in the future you will need to manually overclock it back to how it was when you got it anyway. If you have 0 knowledge about overclocking I personally wouldn't recommend a pre overclocked bundle.

Yea pre-overclocked systems are really only good to guarantee the parts are capable of the specified clock.

Read this thread http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18399808 & it will answer your questions like it did mine,i got the 2600k/4 core/8 thread cpu overclocked to 5.2ghz & its still not powerful enough, you need the upcoming "Ivybridge E" 6 core/12 thread cpu & i think even with this cpu,you will still need to overclock it for Arma 2 & more so for the upcoming Arma 3,like i will. (Arma 2 & 3 need as many cores/threads you can throw at it,its "CPU dependant",8 core/16 thread CPU would be even better)

Looks like Arma 2 doesn't even use 4 cores properly so 6 cores aren't going to help.
