Answering the OP’s question…
I would have thought a ground invasion of Iran would be out of the question. It’s a large, populous country with some pretty serious terrain (ideal for those nasty insurgents to hide in). They are better equipped than the Iraqi’s and they’d be far more motivated to fight as well. I also doubt that the American public would support another war, which would have to be very much larger and far more costly in terms of dollars, and lives, than Iraq.
To get stuck in to where the thread’s headed off to now…
With regards to that BBC article mentioning Israel pondering air strikes, even chucking tactical nuclear warheads at Iran – Has the world gone mad?!
And even if they did start bombing, what happens next? If the powers that be in Tel Aviv think they’ve had it bad with suicide bombers and the like, what’s going to happen if they start launching air strikes at Iran?
The world today is shall we say a very different place from 1981. Back then nobody gave a monkeys about Iraq, or the Middle East in general, no one. If it did it today Israel would become even more unpopular with the West than it already is, and can they afford that? And even in America, things would surely get a bit iffy for them. Any strike would have to fly over American controlled airspace and regardless of how it was spun by the White House, this would implicate Uncle Sam.
