Wimbledon

Grrr was hoping Bartoli wouldnt win, really wanted Lisicki to win because one shes hot as hell and secondly she seems like a really nice girl.

Well played though by Bartoli, just a shame Lisicki couldnt get into her game :(

It is rare to see a modern day final, where you can tell who is going to win the point by the ball toss prior to the serve.
Of all the points of her game that failed her, that was the most apparent.
Lisicki won the points where she tossed correctly, it was a very obvious issue for her today.

I'd quite like to see Women's tennis going up to 5 sets to be honest. Lisicki started to look as though she could come back towards the end but the fact that their matches can be so short really doesn't help ease the pressure to get a firm grip early on and ease their way back into the game should they go down a set or two. Imagine if the Men's was only 3 sets, Murray would have gone out to Verdasco, Djokovic would have lost in straight sets to Murray at the US Open etc.

+1 and it's similar to what I mentioned a few pages back.

I'll say one thing about women playing less sets. They're under more pressure to get early leads. Men can lose 2 sets before being fully warmed up and still make a comeback.

I think they'd be happy to continue earning the same money for less work ;)

In all seriousness though they couldn't last 5 sets, the level of performance would get so poor it would be unreal. Compared to the Men's game they wouldn't be able to cope with that physically it's exactly the same reason you don't have many mixed events in the Olympics...

Personally I would hate it...it's bad enough at 3 sets at times.

BBC apology for John Inverdale remark about Marion Bartoli

He said: "I just wonder if her dad, because he has obviously been the most influential person in her life, did say to her when she was 12, 13, 14 maybe, 'listen, you are never going to be, you know, a looker.

"'You are never going to be somebody like a Sharapova, you're never going to be 5ft 11, you're never going to be somebody with long legs, so you have to compensate for that.
:o

Anyone understand the betting odds for tomorrow? If I put down £100 for Djokovic to win, what's the most I could possibly win? I don't suppose it'll be anything like 5/1.

5/1 on a 2 horse race and you are betting on the favourite? good luck with that!

Worst I need £500 quick post ever

Well played to Bartoli although it was a bit disappointing from Lisicki, especially in the first set where she just didn't seem to get started. Part of that is no doubt down to how Bartoli came out and performed though.

She absolutely tore her apart. One was determined, focused, and hungry, and the other seem overwhelmed and barely in the match, mentally speaking.

Complete waste of prize money though, getting as much as the men, its insane. If they played 5 sets like the men then fair do's, but for 2 sets and and an hours play? Ridiculous.

Apologised for stating the obvious?
She did display a nice behind climbing up to hug everyone in the family box today.

You should read the BBC comments section, they're fairly calling for him to be skinned alive.

Yeah we were all thinking it, but a bit dumb to actually voice it live on air.

and sad for Sabine, she's been my fave for quite a few years.

I agree, I remember watching Bartoli get torn apart by Venus Williams back in the 2007 final. This women's final was just like the 2007 but this time around Bartoli playing the role of the dominate Williams.

John McEnroe said:
She couldn't possibly have thought at any stage that she would have been able to pull off a Grand Slam victory or a Wimbledon triumph.

"It absolutely will inspire millions who will all be thinking, 'Hey, anything is possible!

Is it just me or are those remarks kind of patronising and condensing? Maybe John is getting a senile in his old age but Bartoli is a former Wimbledon finalist and since her lose has lots of improvements to her overall game - serves bigger, moves faster, hits harder and can better anticipate what her opponent is going to do as she's more experienced. Bartoli's victory is story of hard work and determination to go that one step better not some fantasy fairy tale/Roy of the Rovers type of ending.
