Win 7 hangs

I have a new build machine and have installed Windows 7 home on it.
More often than not, it will hang for a minute or so, not long after booting. It dosent seem to matter what I'm doing, opening or closing a window, clicking on a program or somesuch. It'll hang then carry on as if nothing happened. Is it a bug in explorer? It never does it while I'm playing a game or stuff like that.

Oh sorry, it's a Vertex3 120G, no idea what firmware but it is not long out so must be pretty up to date. I've turned off pagefile as I have 8Gig of memory and believe AHCI is set.

I gather I can't update the SSD firmware if it is the system drive. What is the easiest way round this? Do I have to Haul it out of my machine n plug it into another one?

Sorry to hijack the thread but this is happening to me too on my new build.

seems to pause for about 5-10 seconds after booting then continues as normaly.

make ? model ? firmware ? Disabled Indexing ? pagefile moved ? ACHI mode ?

Make: Crusial
Model: M4 128GB
Firmware: HD Tune says 0001 but i don't know if thats right (i bought it on pre-order so i'd assume the latest one or fairly recent).
Disabled Indexing: not sure what that is?
Pagefile Moved: again don't know
ACHI: On in the bios as not using RAID.

any help would be much appreciated.

Yes you need to put it in another machine running ACHI and download the toolkit to update. Pain I know, but I just did a quick install of Win7 on another HDD and did it that way.

Disable indexing - Goto My Computer and right click on the SSD drive and goto properties. At the bottom untick "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties".

You might need to click continue if you have UAC on, and also click "Ignore All" if you get the prompt.

I would also make sure you are using the latest version of intel storage manager.

I've not had any problems with my Vertex 3 touch wood !

its processing that atm...

what causes it? i thought windows 7 was ideal for SSDs

EDIT: UPDATE.

still does it after disabling that option Olly. if anything it now pauses for longer. 20+ seconds

=(

it is, but our SSDs our newer tech :)

If your mobo supports it (my P67 Maximus IV Extreme does) enable hot swap on all of your sata ports......that might help.

got a Asus P8P67 standard. will try that now.

All my hard drives including the Boot/SSD are plugged into the Intel ports rather than the Marvell ports... could that be causing any issues?

nope, you'd want them off the intel ports as the Mavell ones are, well.....rubbish :)

I just done a quick google and apparently hot swap needs to be enabled for these things to work properly, hopefully that will cure it for you

it would appear that the apple keyboard doesn't work prior to windows loading so had to route out an old beige hideous beast lol.

that seems to have sorted the problem, thank you very much.

that index thingy you got me to uncheck in the 'my computer' properties screen, what does that do? should i re-tick the box?

ah good :)

You can re-tick it if you want, I keep mine unticked...basically it indexes your drive for quicker searches, meaning it always polls the SSD.

i shall leave it as it is now then. i just hope the OP has got his troubles sorted, and sorry for the hijack =p

again, thanks

Not yet, no. My SSD firmware is 2.02 which is what it shipped with. 2.06, the latest version has a few minor by fixes and a fixfor installing windows but other than that, no mention of random hangs. Dunno if the newer one will address the issues or not.

I have a similar issue.

Make ? Seagate
Model ? Momentus XT 500GB
Firmware ? SD26 (latest)
Disabled Indexing ? Will try that now
Pagefile moved ? No - should I move this to my Samsung F1 1TB?
ACHI mode ? No

What are the correct answers for a decent shot at fixing this?
