Hi

I have an old Dell Dimension 4600 Running Win XP service pack2, unused for a period of time, Have it all up and running but am having a problem connecting to the Net. ISP is BT infinity network connection is showing as connected on the network connections tab.

When I try to connect to any web address, it seems to initially say it's looking for the page, progress bar confirms it's looking but then I get

"The page cannot be displayed"

Cannot find server or DNS error.

any help would be appreciated as I'm lost.

Open up a CMD window (Start, run, cmd <hit enter>)

Type in..

ipconfig
<hit enter>

Right click, 'mark', highlight the output, and tap enter -this will copy it to your clipboard.

Then paste it in here.

I wouldn't recommend using XPSP2 on the internet though, it's well out of support.

have just tried to access ipconfig all it does is flash up on the screen and then disappear, one thing, I have just tried Google chrome initially it wouldn't work but it did tell my why, the system clock and date was set incorrectly, have reset it and Chrome now works but Internet explorer still doesn't.

Ethernet or wifi?
Try bledd's suggestion again as ipconfig output will help.
Also from a cmd try pinging the router (ping 192.168.1.254) and doing some DNS lookup (nslookup overclockers.co.uk).

I wouldn't recommend using XPSP2 on the internet though, it's well out of support.

This. I'd put linux on it before going any further tbh.

You misread my instructions.

Open cmd first, hit enter
Then type ipconfig in cmd.

XP is well out of support, not just SP2.

Thanks Bledd beginners mistake. I'm backing up the system first off, got another 5 hours left, I think this might be a bit of a project for me just out of interest to see how well it will run if at all. Will re do the cmd/ipconfig as soon as it completes the back up.

Another thing to try is to change the DNS server on the network adapter.

Steps will be similar to this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/change-tcp-ip-settings#1TC=windows-7

Except for XP it will be just called Internet Protocol Version. Leave the IP address as automatic, and for the DNS serves change them to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (which are Google DNS servers) and see if that works.
