At the start of xp pro it has the bar that indicates that its loading then later it turns to a black screen then few mins later it restarts, don't know what the problem is.

I can go in safe mode fine..

More details on your system would help. Make a sig showing everything.

Have you made any changes recently to computer or installed any new drivers or software?
 
Basically all i did was open up a rar file it had a bugs i think avg sorted it out, restarted it. then suddenly the bar appears , then black screen, few secs later restarts back to the beginning. i can go on safe mode. don't know whats the cause of the problem.
 
rar file, bugs, AVG?

You mean that a .rar file contained a virus or similar and AVG tried to fix something?
 
So what loads on bootup that doesnt in safe mode?

Installed new drivers or a program recently?.....

Uninstall one thing at a time until the problem goes. Starting with the most recently installed software.
 
Anyways im back.

Well in safe mode it looks exactly how it would in normal mode.

i haven't installed any new drivers or programs but there was one file i downloaded, i can give you the link if im allowed to. that might be the key to the problem.

So you want me to wipeout everything in add/remove?

Maybe try a virus scan in safe mode as its possible avg didnt manage to fix the problem. Would seem to be the problem as it happened straight after the dodgey rar download.

Do you have any other av program u could use stored on hd? Only try that if avg finds nothing though as i pressume u wont be able newly installed program.

In safe mode does it not have "safe mode" in each corner? Should look totally different to normal mode as graphic drivers wont be running and res at minimum.

I have other Avs but not installed i dont think it will allow me to install in safe mode.

about the safe mode your spot on about res.

Will this mean that i will have to reinstall windows?
if so could you give me some guidance on formatting the pc and reinstallling it. I have windows xp home, xp pro service pack 2. I'll give you other details about hardware if neccessary.

Dont rush to formatting just yet.

Have you tried scanning in safemode?

You could also try a system restore (can that be done in safe mode?). Restore normally never works for me but did once.....nice surprise after many failed ones.
 
it seems system restore won't work.
scanning doesn;t appear to help.
I don't think i have any other options.

Could you give me a guide on formatting, installing xp, hardware installations that are required?
