Just built a new machine as follows:

AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P AMD 770
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 10666C9 1333MHz TwinX Dual Channel
Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024MB GDDR5

which gives me a base score of 5.9 with the following individual scores:

Processor: 6.5
Memory: 7.4
Graphics: 7.3
Gaming Graphics: 7.3
Hard disk: 5.9

I'm just wondering why I am getting such a low score for the hard disk and if there is anything I can do to improve it ?

I haven't overclocked the processor or attempted to enable the 2 additional cores so know the processor score can be higher.

Mine was 5.3, now though...

:)

As thepeganator said though, I am sure you can't get over 5.9 unless you go SSD or RAID-0, or even better SSD's in RAID-0 :D

Thanks for the replies

I've been thinking about buying another drive for raid but I was thinking more of mirroring (raid 1) for disaster recovery rather than raid 0. I was put off thinking that raid 1 would slow my machine down and would be better off with an external backup drive.

If I was to go for raid 1 would my rating possibly be less than 5.9 while for raid 0 it would definately be higher ?

You can't get above 5.9 with mechanical sata harddrives even in RAID. I had 2 F3's in raid0 and got the same core as you got with one. Either way you should'nt really care what WEI says it's a crappy benchmark.

Why do you care about the experience index? Does it really matter at all? It is not a comprehensive benchmark. If you want to compare HDD performance you'd be better off grabbing one of the many free tools that will easily provide you with far more meaningful numbers. Try HDTach, CrystalDiskMark, HDTune, etc.

In my experience, the rating is almost always 5.9 for a decent mechanical HDD. I used to boot off 2 striped Raptors (5.9), then switched to a single VelociRaptor (5.9), built a computer for my mum who boots from a Samsung F3 (5.9). Notice a pattern here? I've heard rumours that VelociRaptors in RAID0 will push it marginally above this limit but that's a lot of money just to obtain +0.1 in the windows score. What I can tell you is that the disk performance of the above systems is definately not the same. The experience index is only a guideline at best.

Now I boot from an intel SSD (7.8) and yes, it does outperform a mechanical HDD but boot times and the like are not vastly different. I do see applications launch very much quicker so if that is something you would benefit from then it might be worth considering an SSD.

I think you need to ask yourself what your priorities are here? Do you really need an improvement in HDD performance or just want to see the number go up? Tried Photoshop? ;)

6.6 here...
From four 640GB Caviar Blacks RAID10 in 3ware 9650SE.

Nice! Not surprised at all with that kind of hardware. I'm assuming though you had good reason for this kind of setup, web server perhaps?
