Win8 Tablets

Tbh you can't blame people for not wanting to spend £400+ for a surface with 16GB of ram, when they can buy two Nexus 7's with 28GB each.

The other manufacturers can see the poor sales and they are quite rightly holding back.

Phone 8 isn't doing any better either.

Is there some kind of delay with intel shipping the chips or is everyone waiting to see how well the surface sells?

The windows 8 phone hasn't been helped by the fact the Nexus is hugely cheaper and the iPhone is established. If the Windows 8 release back in October had had some marketing and also the tablets and phones had been ready then it would be a completely different story. Maybe they could have had some kind of deal where you get a Windows tab & phone for a couple of hundred off the RRP. I for one would have jumped all over that.

Looks like the Acer W700 won't be in the UK for around another month, I've never seen such a shoddy release for a new line of products - the original release date was supposedly alongside Win8 in October!

Yeah, I wanted a Surface but just couldn't do it, I wanted X86, and there's no X86 tablets, so I'm stuck with my W500.

Going to probably get a Surface 2.0 or something when they come out :p

How you finding the W500 and have you upgraded to Windows 8?

W500's okay I guess.
I've thrown Windows 8 on to it.
Bought a class 10 SD card, performed a registry hack so I can use 4GB of the 32GB SD card as ready boost.

The battery life could be better, the display could also be better.

It's a stop gap, the only tablet I'd consider is the W510 so far, but I'd ideally want it at 350.

The W500 will definitely last me until we see an influx of Windows 8 tablets at least, and I'd recommend it to people.

It took a hit in reviews because it was a 500 quid product and had Windows 7, but it's a completely different product at 250 and Windows 8.

Right seems intel have ***** up. The clover tail chips are not ready and aren't being mass produced yet. Unconfirmed reports its to do with the power managment side of the chip.
Loads of sites now reporting this, so looks like it is intels fault at lack of tablets and dates keep getting pushed back. Just read one saying don't expect any before 12 of December, which would miss all the Christmas period and some sites linking this to the leaving of Sinofsky as the win8 tablet release is in total disarray and is looking likely to miss the entire Christmas rush.

That explains the Atoms, Acer (and other companies i guess) are holding back on the ARMs until they see the impact Surface RT makes, but where are the Ivy Bridges (is that the name of the i3/5/7s?)?

Yeah, the Macbook Air has had the CPU for ages, there is no logical reason for the delay.

The OEMs would have had access to Windows earlier then the release.

Its just extremely bad overall.

Awwww, well at least you can go and hug your Android doll in bed tonight... ;)

Seriously though while you do have a couple of good points they are surrounded by rubbish points and dripping in green paint...

MS and the hardware manufacturers could sell their tablets at cost too but decided it was better to make a profit on them... I agree though with the 16GB comment (to an extent). The fact the OS needs 16GB is a worry, I was hoping RT was going to be a built version of Windows with the same code language but it appears all they have done is rewritten the normal windows code for ARM... Things like allowing EXE's to install but not run, the RT desktop which appeared a few months ago and that 16GB issue. They should have made a clean break, allow plug and play of many devices but have RT as an actual ARM tablet OS like iOS and Android, then have the Pro as the hardware for those that want all the extras.

I can't help but feel slightly frustrated that the manufacturers can't keep us updated - it doesn't matter whether the problem is internal or external I think they should be keeping us (potential/definite customers) up to date.

Then replace the Nexus 7's with two different tablets, if it'll make you feel better?

I really don't care, and chose the Nexus 7 as it provides the best value for money right now, the fact it runs Android is beyond my control I'm afraid.

I'm not going to suggest any of your points are rubbish, I'll leave the pettiness to you. However, imho the price for Surface is ridiculous for what is on offer, and the less said about the £99.99 asking price for the 'touch keyboard' the better.

Which two tablets can you get for 200 each? That's the question. The Surface is at or cheaper than the other 10 inch tablets that aren't subsidised by google/Amazon (or very cheap no name ones)*. Which two tablets can you get that are not subsidised by google and made with an Mg (or even mostly aluminium) case? Apple charge more, Asus charge about the same, so do Samsung...

It was more the tone of the message that kinda suggests you don't want much else but Android, or more specifically don't like RT and WP8. Do you know something everyone else doesn't about WP8 as I haven't seen any sales figures for that yet... Same with the Surface, we have had "modest" (not poor) sales acknowledgement from MS and the tablet sold out at pre order.

It was a great masterstroke by Google to sell their new phone as cheap as possible, no profit but they make their money on advertising anyway so... Maybe it will increase the marketshare even more, however we will have to wait and see what it does to other phone prices and how that makes the (non subsidised) manufacturers feel. :)

*So that excludes the Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Kindle Fire(s), all sold at or under cost.
