Win8 Tablets

Got my Acer W500 yesterday. Windows 8 is great on a tablet, glad i waited instead of getting an iPad. Tho installing Windows 8 to the W500 is a proper pain! Took ages to delete enough stuff to install it tho. I can see why people think a "32gb" Surface is to small.

Is there any further news on when Surface Pro is expected? From what I'm reading it looks like it's going to be 2013 before we see it.

Huh?
Just throw Windows 8 ISO on a USB pen and install via that, it was simple.

I thought it was gonna be quicker haha

Any idea why a lot of the Metro apps wont use the internet connect (tethering with iPhone 3GS). They say no internet connect, but some apps like store and games are ok. They have permission to use internet.

I use Brazos tweaker, set some aggressive power states, and really lowered the voltage.
I have no idea why AMD threw 1.3v into it, I've got it down to 0.9v stable at 1GHZ.

I can eek about 6 hours video playback on it, it's no where near as good as other tablets, but with the lack of any X86 tablets with clovertrail, I can live with it.

Performance is fine, although some Metro games don't run the best, as they're simply not optimised for X86 low performance CPU's like the C-50. With my PC, since I'm running multitudes higher performance, I can just brute force through it.

I'd definitely say it's worth a buy.
Speakers are the best I've seen of a device of its kind, probably because it's a chunky beast.

It definitely isn't as stylish as other tablets, and it's quite heavy, the display is inconsistent, sometimes (Metro stuff) it's perfectly fine, colours look amazing, but browsing other things can look dull.

Viewing angles are fine, but I see no reason why you'd be looking at it from ridiculous angles anyway :p

i see samsung ativ are in stock in some places now - first clover trail iv'e seen in stock in UK ... but i'm waiting for the Lenovo Thinkpad 2 ...

£800 For the Ativ with Keyboard, £700 without. They are having a laugh.
Ouch

I have to say, things aren't looking good for the price of the Surface pro if these Atom devices are being priced at that level. I reckon we're looking at over a grand when they launch.

Well yeah, proper ultrabooks are £1k+ so less than £1j is pretty good for what you get. The RT is what you want if you want something comparable to iPads and Android tablets.

Having said that, the Acer W700 is very reasonable, yet still has a high resolution IPS screen, Ivy Bridge, 128GB SSD and great build quality (aluminium back and such), plus accessories for ~£700, so it's possible price gouging by those who have stock, hoping to catch early adopters.

I reckon the base Surface Pro without covers will be 2x the cost of the similar RT Surface, so ~£800, with £1000 being the top point with a touch cover and biggest SSD.

I hope I haven't just thrower a ton down the drain archos 9 60gb. A one reviews say very slow CPU (hopfully win8 will speed that up) and dody touch screen. That's the bit. I'm most worried about. The other big worry is screen res, hopping to make a registry change.

If it is rubbish then hopfully I can sell it and not lose much.
Big risk, big risk.
Still if it's half reasonable it'll be worth it for 2months untill the surface pro is out.

What are the drawbacks of the RT?

Is the surface worth getting for £400?

Rt can only run metro apps. So none of your old hardware.
Is it worth it, kind of depends what you want to do with it.
It's a high end device so is bang on price wise with competition.
Obviously you can get cheaper tablets.
And there is a lack off apps, but you do get office and optional touch cover, if you're interested in working with it. You also get tight cloud integration and comparability with other win8 devices, again this all depends on what your going to do with it.

IMO win8 is by far the best OS ATM. I think metro is great.
