Win8 Tablets

im still sorely tempted to get that asus me400c purely because I would want it for sky go, im presuming as it runs full fat win8 that wont be an issue in desktop mode do you think the atom cpu/gpu combination will be able to run anything the tegra3 can?

Quick qestion.
What are the boot times on both the RT and 'full fat' tablets?
Are they instant like Apple/Android, or do you have the normal Windows boot process?

My Acer W700 is booting from cold in less than 10 seconds. Windows 8 has some trickery which enables very fast booting (essentially a very deep form of hibernation I think), but if you restart the times are dramatically higher, like Windows 7.

I got the Asus me400c last week. Love it! Coming from an original Asus Transformer TF101, it's so much better. Lovely to hold, nice and light, battery seems fine so far, not had it running out on my yet. Got Sky go running on there, dropbox syncing properly with all my work folders, luvverly! Only niggle is sometimes Chrome seems to stop recognising touch inputs and needs to restart to get going again, not sure yet if it's just Facebook site that causes that. Boot time, no idea, I dont tend to reboot tablets? Look forward to getting the keyboard cover when it out.

Thanks for the comments re boot times.
Yes, I guess I was referring to standby when I was thinking of instant on.
I tend not to think with my iPad of actually "shutting down". When I've finished, I just press the 'off' button at the top.

So far, has anyone had any issues only sleeping/hibernating their Win8 tabs, without doing shutdowns intermittently?

Ah nice, i'm liking the look of that, is the performance ok on it?

Yeah it's fine for me. Used for browsing, reading large technical pdf's, watched some videos on there, just standard def avi's though, no noticable laginess in the OS which I was getting v annoyed at with the Transformer and Android Jellybean on there.

ah well took the plunge and just nipped out to a local store :)

Ok so after having the ME400C for a little over 24hours I have to say I'm very impressed, much more than I was expecting tbh, I love the fact I can install pretty much anything and still have the metro experience at the same time. I wasn't sure what the atom would be upto performance wise but its pretty nifty for basic use. Had a few apps not install as it said the performance wouldn't be good enough but ive got riptide gp installed and reckless racing ultimate and there both fine.

Tried some streaming of 1080p video but got a few hiccups, not sure if it was the tablet or the wifi that was causing them so im currently copying them over to the microsd.

Sky go works great using firefox, win8 mail app is pants but I knew that, so using outlook, ive basically been using it most of the day here and there and its still showing 32% battery.

If anyone is contemplating getting one I definitely recommend it for the money and if anyone wants me to try anything for them im more than happy to have a go, i'm going to get the official cover I think as it looks pretty good but will wait for it to come down in price a bit or become easier to get. Not sure on the keyboard but time will tell

So far so good :)

Win 8/RT have a new "connected stand-by" feature. It works exactly like other tablets for instant on/off. So if you press the power button it will instantly go in to connected stand-by. Press it again and the tablet will instantly come on, no waiting at all. Same as iOS and Android. This mode is also different from sleep or hibernation, in connected stand-by Windows will power up the wifi/SoC roughly every 30 seconds to check for new emails/messages/whatever. So again the same sort of thing you get on iOS and Android tablets/phones, and it will also have the same sort of battery life too.

Boot times are completely different, even the latest iPad will take about 15 seconds to boot from being completely shut down (see here). Same with Android. Win 8 tablets generally boot in about 10 seconds or under, which is impressive considering this is a full OS and it's still faster.

Connected Standby only works with ARM (8RT) and Atom CPUs. The current crop of IB i3/5/7 CPUs doesn't support it. Need to wait for Haswell.

The Dell XPS 10 looks good.
Shame that the dock is 110 quid and is the only thing that adds proper USB/HDMI to it >.<.

350 quid for a snapdragon tablet with RT is good pricing too.

I nearly bought the xps 10 as it does look good but got the asus me400c instead, I wanted sky go etc and the chances of that coming out soon for RT are at best slim

other than overseas on ebay nope, the rainforest has them listed but 2-3 months or so??

tbh im not going to get the asus one, ive seen one on the same place for about £20 Poetic HardBack Case for ASUS VivoTab Smart ME400C which looks pretty good

I've had a few problems with mine however, sometimes the screen flickers and then last night when i was watching something on sky go it just turned itself off and wouldnt turn back on, not sure if it had just gone flat or not, it also takes an age to charge up? Yours the same regarding charging?

One thing that i dont like is that you cannot do file transfer via usb other than that its still pretty good, downloaded discovery+ yesterday from the store great fun!

Yep l like the first resonable price/spec RT. with a few port issues 128GB model would be nice.

Still an absolute disgrace we're still 6 months in and the marketplace for Windows 8 devices is how it is.

4 and a half months you mean, Win 8 was released end of October. But yeah it's pathetic. Some OEM's moan about bad sales but if they actually made something worth buying then they will obviously not have this problem.

So many people like myself just seem to be waiting for something worth buying. Surface Pro is great... apart from battery life and the fact it's not even available in the UK yet. Looks like it will be many more months of waiting, until Haswell tablets turn up, or a Surface Pro 2 with Haswell which will mean better battery life + thinner lighter design.
