Just left XP which i knew my way around, but W7 seems quite alien to me.

I'm looking for some w7 tweaks for performance, I'm not into all this gadets and shiny stuff so what's to remove?

thanks

Absolutely, the biggest change from XP to W7 is that you don't have to tweak it to make it work, along with flipping the concept of "keeping it low profile", w7 runs just as smooth with crap loads of gadgets and applications on the go.

Unlike XP, W7 can cope very well lots of things going on at once.

One of the best things about Windows 7 is that you spend less time configuring and tweaking and more time USING your pc :)

No need. It's fine out of the box.
This. I might turn a few services off but I've turned them back on now. :D System Restore saved my life a few months ago, I forgot to turn it off and I remembered that it was on and maybe it could help me. It did. :)

Windows Defender and Windows Firewall were the two other services I turned off. I turned them back on to see what the performance hit was like and there wasn't any noticeable difference so on they have stayed.

I generally turn off indexing and the animations for windows etc, and mouse and window shadows as i prefer the look, as well as it feeling a little more responsive, and i switch off windows defender as i think its useless, but i agree with the fact that you dont really need to touch it unless you are running 3+ year old hardware. I also tend to downgrade UAC to the minimum as it does my head in when re-installing and opening.

Oh yeah, I forgot. I do turn Indexing off. I don't really see any benefit to it. :)

The Windows 7 file search is great. It's worth keeping indexing on. No need to use 3rd party tools like Everything.

I think it comes down to your user habbits. I leave mine on because I've gotten so used to hitting windows key and just typing for whatever I want. The downside of this; it has made me a bit sloppy with my organisation and filing regiment.

You can gain some performance by turning the visual FX off but on a modern system it makes little difference IMHO.

Organisation isn't as important if the search is spot on. Same thing goes for Firefox. There's no need to use the file tree to locate bookmarks if the original entry is indexed and easily found using the address bar/search box.

just keep an eye on start up items, i use msconfig, but loads of proggies out there, for any os that is the best tip or tweak, turning off all the crap that adds to boot up is a good move. itunes and adobe reader for example will always add themselves to the startup after each upgrade, that is why i dont use either.

Only UAC and Defender is disabled on my machine, UAC stays on the other machines at home.

Yes I've seen all the arguments supporting UAC and vice versa but my decision is to keep it off because it makes less angry every time a prompt comes up or I am not allowed to use a program or function properly because UAC stops it. I do a lot on my PC and have reliable safeguards in place to avoid infections and malicious actions so dont' need the added hassle it brings.

I also turn off UAC, I had forgotten about it actually because I never see it now. :)

The only tweaks I have made to Windows 7 is one or two registry changes to speed up the thumbnails in the task bar [when you hover over an icon].

I use Autoruns to monitor startup items. Far more comprehensive than MSCONFIG or CCleaner.
