Just looked out the window and the cleaner is here doing the windows.

using what looks like an extra long brush. normally he is up on a ladder. so i asked him why he now does it that way..

Health and Safety have stopped window cleaners from using a ladder apparently. How insane!!

rant over

our window cleaners havent been in about 5months lol

they used to come every other week anyway which annoyed me somewhat because it really wasnt needed but they said it was either that or nothing, i can remember one year they didnt do any windows for around 5 weeks until it was christmas eve lol! probably thought they would get loads of tips

My late grandfather used to do property maintenance (window cleaning) and had a few falls in his time.

I reckon its probably more due to them trying to sue the propety owners for their own stupidity. "Your floor was too slippy and my ladder fell" or "your cat ran up the ladder and pushed me off".

Sounds reasonable to me.

Is it a suitable activity?
This refers to the type of work and its duration.

As a guide, only use a ladder or stepladder:

  • in one position for a maximum of 30 minutes;
  • for ‘light work’ - they are not suitable for strenuous or heavy work.
  • If a task involves a worker carrying more than 10 kg (a bucket of something) up the ladder or steps it will need to be justified by a detailed manual handling assessment;
  • where a handhold is available on the ladder or stepladder;
  • where you can maintain three points of contact (hands and feet) at the working position.
  • On a ladder where you cannot maintain a handhold, other than for
    a brief period of time, other measures will be needed to prevent a fall or reduce the consequences of one.
  • On stepladders where a handhold is not practicable a risk assessment will have to justify whether it is safe or not

ours are already banned from using water in Nottingham, they have been forced to throw rocks and bricks at the window in an attempt to clean them, Seriously its getting expensive

my other half sacked the window cleaner for doing a poor job so we got a long handled thingy to do them with , saves money as well

ours never used to get into the corners and expected extra for wiping along the pvc lol

its not like 5quid for 5minutes work isnt already enough

Ours still used ladders when they were round last week? When doing our ground floor windows which are about 2m above ground level (sloping site) the guy stepped of the ladder and just shimmied along the ledge!! Saw one of ours fall off from the first floor once too coz he was having an argument on the phone with his missus lol. Dam cheap too about six quid for 12(decent sized) windows.
