Windows 10 FAQ

Once its activated once you can do whatever you like regarding complete re installs. I personally only leave one drive connected when installing the operating system to ensure that the boot records and everything else can only go on that drive :)

Doesn't look like it works with the OEM / Upgrade key.

I used another key I have to install and activate W7 Pro, upgraded to W10 and as soon as it logged in W10 was activated. Done a clean install and it's activated as well.

Getting a new SSD tomorrow so will do a clean install on that and everything should be activated fine. Looks like the ole W7 clean install isn't going to work on this. :(


I'm not sure though how people will go about activating when they change motherboard for a clean install of Windows 10. I imagine as per the MS guys message earlier you may need to install W7 using a retail key & then upgrade to W10. Or if you have a W7 / 8.1 OEM / upgrade key and then have to contact MS in some form to allow that key to be activated for W10 again. :confused: Who knows though?

I don't have another motherboard to have a play unfortunately.
 
Disable Login background and display theme colour

Hi All,

Here is a quick guide on disabling the windows 10 login screen background and just having the theme accent colour:

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System

Create a new DWORD file

Name it DisableLogonBackgroundImage
Set value data to 1

Tada.

I want to know how to change the actual BG though, apparently that is buried somewhere or you can create a folder within resources and point a reg file towards it

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:after 2 hours i still can't delete my windows.old file wouldn't mind but it's 28Gb

i've set user control from system to myself but i get numerous errors when trying to delete it. and it always says you need permission from myself to delete the files. i'm the only account on this computer and yes it is administrator.
 
Anyone else having an issue where settings will not open? A window opens and closes immediately. A search around so far has some solutions involving powershell but they have not worked for me sadly.

Control panel opens fine.
 
Apologies if this is the wrong thread. Hoping to go to W10 tonight. Have deleted as much crap as I can and have taken a ghost image as a backup so I'm ready to rock... my only concern is drivers for older devices. I have a Creative Labs XFi Fatal1ty (PCI) which I've never replaced or upgraded. Has anyone with older devices like this had problems getting drivers and/or suites to work with 10?

Or do I take it an as excuse to get a new card? I've loved this card so had planned to keep it until it died, but if it's not going to work with 10 (and it'll mean ditching that ghastly ribbon cable) I'll cough up and buy new...

2 of the PCs in my house have the "Ok, notify me when ready" button, but my main PC doesn't have this yet. My main PC comes up with "This report isn't available at the moment" when I select the PC check option... Bit strange.

I'll leave it a little while to sort itself out before I decide to download the ISO. I'm in no rush anyway :).
 
Here's an important one:

How to get the start screen back (for those of us not trapped in 1995)

Settings > Personalization > Start

Toggle "Use Start full screen" to on.

Simple :)
 
I've tried just about everything and cannot get Cortana to work, All I get is this setting restricted due to your region. I live in the UK have every think that I can think of set to he UK but it still doesn't work, installed all the packs I can find relating to the UK. Even tried setting to the USA but nothing, so any help greatly appreciated.

The 0xc004c003 'blocked key' error is misleading. I got that error after the first clean install following an upgrade. Did the clean install again and it activated.
