Windows 10 upgrade from 7 and new disk

HI, I have a new 500gb SSD arriving today and want to use the free upgrade to windows 10 from 7 but my current windows installation is on a full 128gb SSD.

What is the best way to do this?

Do I need to mirror my windows installation first (if so how?) and then upgrade when on the new drive?

Thanks for any tips
 
I was afraid that was the best route. I'm lazy and don't want to have to install all my software again but I know it's right

I would clone as a matter of course when doing this update. So yes use your weapon of choice and clone to the 500 (you may like to partition afterwards to reduce the C: to about 250GB).

I used the free cut down version of Acronis from Seagate as one of my SSD drives is a Seagate
 
Have you already gone to 10? If so have you removed the previous windows install folder?

latest version of Ccleaner has this as an option. In fact, I would run Ccleaner so you don't clone over temporary files etc..

I also want to do a fresh install on a new ssd but I'm confused by what this advice means!

If I'm going to do a fresh install on a new ssd then why is it necessary to do the upgrade on the existing install? (I have a about 5GB of space free on a 60GB drive.)

you need to upgrade from a previous os first BEFORE doing a clean install of W10.

steps below

1. make sure your current install of W7 or W8.1 is activated
2. download the ISO and run the setup.exe, this will upgrade to W10 and tag your hardware for W10 use.
3. make sure W10 is activated BEFORE doing a clean install.
4. create a USB stick using the W10 tool
5. remove your old SSD, install your new SSD and boot from the USB stick, press skip both times when prompted for your key and W10 will activate once online which is done by your hardware ID

get any USB stick with 8GB on, download the W10 tool from below and use this to create the W10 install media.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

once done turn of the PC, put in your new SSD and connect the USB stick to a USB port on the back of the PC and turn it on.

go in to boot options in the bios or load the boot sequence screen and pick the USB stick to boot from, this will start the W10 install process.
