Hi guys, I've recently moved to W7 64bit and when I'm installing a program (GTAIV) at this moment in time, when I try to do anything else the computer seems to die. It took about 5 miniutes for device manager to come up so I could check if caching was enabled on my HDD.

Anybody else noticed this or found a fix? I found a few google threads but nobody providing a soloution :(

It also seems to run a bit better when it has "warmed up". I'm on the second disc now and it's running quicker :/

Cheers

Check event viewer for errors/warnings timestamped around the period you experience the problem. Sounds like a hardware issue to me personally.

Accessing a DVD/CDROM is still a bit Windows issue and regardless of which version you run, you can still make the system grind to a crawl with a bad disk. It may well be copy protection which makes deliberate errors on the disk caused the problem. That could also explain why the second disk is faster as only the first is protected.

Cheers for the replies.

I don't really know what I'm doing in event manager to get an accurate reading of a problem. I think you could be on to something namnoc, GTA IV has a securerom protection on it so it could be something to do with that.

I'll have to test it when I install something else.

Cheers bud

If it's always a problem then the cd Rom could be stuck in pio mode or something silly.

Is that the only time when you have slow downs?
I had serious slow downs in general after i did a fresh install. The main culprit was windows bit defender and windows essentials, they were delaying program start up.

Program files -> programs -> turn windows features on and off -> and disabling remote differential compression helped as well, though cant figure out why.

Marc69,

When you say the computer "dies" -- what exactly happens? Have you attempted to run the application through compatibility mode? If you would like to try that, right click on the application and select "Troubleshoot compatibility," from there you will be able to follow on screen prompts to put GTAIV in compatibility mode.

For further assistance and feedback, Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum. It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams.

If he means goes really slow i get this also, but onyl when installing games from the cd, im sure it has to do with my hard drive or dvd rom, any other multi tasking is a breeze, just can only do one thing really when installing a game.
