Windows 7 beta - 9th January

It just seems to function and look the same as vista minus a few changes. Why is everyone raving about it?

Because it's not actually called "Vista", therefore they are allowed to like Windows 7 without admitting they acted like sheep and jamp on the "We hate Vista" bandwagon.

What happens after it expires, does it stop working or just won't update anymore?

It very likely has a timebomb that will disable the system after the expirey date and not allow you to use it. Nothing wrong with that either, as everyone using the beta should fully expect it to stop working when Microsoft said it would.

Wonder if you can keep it running by changing the date back like you used to....

Can someone recommend a wifi card that's compatible with Win 7 x64 plz? Apparently there is no planned support for my current card.

Is it possible to get ride of the shortcut key mark on the icons on your desktop in Windows 7, like you do with the Tweak UI in Win XP?!?

Can you post the key?

Not sure if anyone has seen this but the keys which seem to be handed out by Microsoft are the same, here is a small list of the keys doing the rounds:

32Bit:

4HJRK-X6Q28-HWRFY-WDYHJ-K8HDH
QXV7B-K78W2-QGPR6-9FWH9-KGMM7
6JKV2-QPB8H-RQ893-FW7TM-PBJ73
GG4MQ-MGK72-HVXFW-KHCRF-KW6KY
TQ32R-WFBDM-GFHD2-QGVMH-3P9GC

64Bit:

D9RHV-JG8XC-C77H2-3YF6D-RYRJ9
482XP-6J9WR-4JXT3-VBPP6-FQF4M
RFFTV-J6K7W-MHBQJ-XYMMJ-Q8DCH
7XRCQ-RPY28-YY9P8-R6HD8-84GH3
JYDV8-H8VXG-74RPT-6BJPB-X42V4

I checked and I got 2 on this list, so this would indicate the keys would not be unique to the first 2.5 million. Aslo why would MS not give out unique keys?

Your thoughts?

Nope, but the speculation in this thread is that it will be by the beginning of Q4 this year so that the OS will be out before the Christmas sales, and not like Vista which they missed and released in Q1.. I think!

I've got a couple of questions about win7 How long did it take to download and did you have any problems downloading it?

I've tried downloading it twice and it's got as far as 20%, about 650mb, then stopped and it's taken 7hrs to get that far.
I've got an 8mb connection and my browser is firefox 3 if that makes any difference?

Download it from a torrent and check the SHA-1 hash after.

idd, how fast it takes to dl will vary depending on the speeds you get from the site/amount of users downloading.
Very happy with w7 apart from the tearing issue which is driver related so will need to wait until there are some drivers released that fix this before I re-install it or I might just create a dual boot.

I installed Win7 64-bit yesterday on my new build.

I am using my Netgear WG311v3 PCI

The latest drivers 3.1 are not digitally signed so you need to keep F8 at startup.

However, the 3.0 driver I've just found is working fine, so must be OK (digitally signed).

Later Edit:-

Scratch that the driver is pants!

Pingtimes are varying up and down but averaging 400ms

A laptop on the same wireless network is <1ms

Suggests Windows 7 doesn't like the driver, though it sort of works

Got Windows 7 installed on my main machine, Installed & found all of my devices without a problem except my Netgear USB dongle which i was not suprised really. Windows update came up after getting the dongle working saying that there was an updated driver for the NVidia graphics cards. Downloaded & installed the NVidia control panel fine but at the end windows reported that it failed?? Also the graphics performance seemed very sluggish at times & also whenever switching windows my monitor kept going black.

Anyway after various research on the internet i found that the best option to do was to download the latest Vista NVidia drivers, and before installing set the compatibility options to Windows Vista & the drivers installed without a problem and all of the sluggish & graphics problem i had with the Windows 7 WDM 1.1 Beta drivers had disappeared. I did the exact same same with the latest Creative X-Fi drivers for Vista too, they installed without a problem too with compatibility set to Vista. Windows 7 now runs like s*** off a shovel! Roll on Windows 7!

I managed to get win7 downloaded and installed in 3 hours today...i a lot quicker than it took to dl 29% last week! First impressions is that it's a lot quicker than vista. I've got it dual booting on my laptop with vista, just partitioned the 2nd hd to get it on. It found everything on installed except for a usb driver and the hd audio but thats no biggy.

When it comes out i am definately getting it, i've only been using it for a few hours and i already like it better than vista!

Just a quick question just downloaded win7 but unsure to install it. Will i lose everthing on my pc (i have backed up) and when it finishes what happens (didnt get a windows disk with my pc just a key)
All help would be great.

love it, flys along and certainly best beta OS I've ever seen EXCEPT, IE8 beta is soooo slow, have ditched it and using chrome, might stick with it as well as so fast.

systems feels so much snappier than vista, and even runs v fast on a atom netbook.
