A friend has a brand new Sony Vaio laptop with windows 7 on it.

I connected to her router and got an ip address, but no internet access. I checked the IE connection settings and it was set to auto detect. I turned off the firewall and still nothing. I tried another laptop on the same router and it was fine. Tried her new laptop and still no access. I can ping local addresses and all ok, no result pinging google.co.uk.

She has another access point in the house (house has thick walls so 2 wireless boxes) I connect to that one and it works fine.

She has now come round to my house and tried to get access to the internet and the laptop is having the same problems as the first router. Connects to network but then no internet access. However differently to her first router it eventually it connects, but I notice that when I try and go to an internet site, eg google there is a lag before it eventually opens the page. I try the same site on my PC and it loads instantly.

Any ideas? I just cannot see why its not getting internet access even though it is connected to the router.

A brand new Sony Vaio you say? Pre-loaded with garbage no doubt? Including some form of "internet security" at a guess?

Close?

does she perhaps have two firewalls conflicting was av software is she running as some av software now scans sites and it can cause lag.

Try turning off/unchecking 'auto detect' in the internet options. Also try updating the wireless drivers if possible. Is it running any kind of security software? What are the security settings on the router(s)?

Thanks for the suggestions, I removed the free 60 day version of Mcafee and put AVG and Zonealarm on. Windows firewall is turned off and while testing I shut off Zonealarm. I am sure when I installed AVG I removed the site checking feature because as suggested it does cause a lag. However I will double check. I have also uncheck auto detect.

My router is just WPA2, no mac filtering. I am not sure on her first router, it was at her parents house and I didn't want to start tinkering with their settings. She is only over in the country for a few days and bought a new laptop to take back to her work in a safari lodge in Africa so if there is a Windows issue I want to sort it asap!

Remove both Zonealarm and AVG, turn windows firewall back on and get MS security essentials. As above check the connection settings are not set to auto detect or to use a proxy server.

Just thinking about this, why would it work prefectly fine on one router/access point but not the other? When I tried it on her first router it was even before I installed AVG or Zonealarm.

Might be the security settings on the router itself? Did you check what they were set to?

Apart from WPA2 there is no other security on my router. As for her first router, surely it wouldnt assign an IP address if there were security on it. Apart from Mac filtering and a wireless key, what else is there?

Manual IP address set for any reason?

My only other advice would be to update the wireless drivers and get windows up to date too.
