...plus the Vertex drives will support it shortly also.

My SSD testing is progressing well. There are a couple of items worth reporting on.

1) Windows 7 does currently support TRIM.
2) No SSDs currently enable TRIM support under Windows 7.

OCZ is expected to have TRIM support on its Vertex drives shortly, potentially within the next month from what I've read on their forums. Samsung's latest drive will have TRIM support once Microsoft has released Windows 7; I'm guessing that means September/October.

Intel is remaining curiously quiet on the TRIM issue. I would like to see the existing X25-M drives retrofitted with TRIM as I think that would be a tremendous goodwill gesture on Intel's part; I get that the X25-M is already the fastest thing on the market, but that's no reason to avoid thanking your customers for their support in my mind.

Oh and also it says the 120Gb Vertex drives are quicker than the 30/60Gb models. I think I'll wait for those to drop below £300 and then pick one up :)

One reason is because the 30Gb and 60Gb have 32Mb cache where the 120Gb has 64Mb :)

I'm fairly certain they actually all have the same amount of cache despite what is quoted - all have 64Mb. IIRC the 120Gb drive does have higher IOPS so hence faster speeds.

Stoned have a look at the G.Skill Falcon, the same drive as the Vertex and the 128Gb is already under £300.

So in Windows 7 there is no need to run the wiper tool? It will sort it all for me?

TRIM is not reported supported in the ATA spec yet so TRIM on windows 7 does not work, TRIM support for vertex are for OCZ Trim tool only, they are going to bring an frimware out soon that will support TRIM command fully on Sata spec side so windows 7 will be able to send Trim commands to the drive it self

Yeah mine has 64mb cache.

NOW WHAT! I knew the vertex was the way to go as of now (because of their ability to be flashed to newer firmware.) Looks like that made it worth the extra $$ right there. I love how anytime OCZ improves their drives, they improve mine as well :D

Actually, you are in luck in terms of firmware with the G.Skill Falcons, as they have just released firmware 1571 on the 4th June 2009 for all the falcon models:

Its the same basic hardware as the vertex, but each company produces its own firmware.

I don't think its a big worry to be honest though if you buy another brand. They will all have to have something in place for October when Windows 7 launches, and unless you are caning the drive with these drive tests, I can't honestly see normal usage causing any problems on any of the drives for a a couple of months.
