Windows 7 Graphics Performance Preview

So did anyone get Win7 from MS yet? It was down for a while because of too many downloads, but it's back up now.

Only available for the first 2.5 million downloads.

Due to an enormous surge in demand, the download experience was not ideal so we listened and took the necessary steps to ensure a good experience. We have clearly heard that many of you want to check out the Windows 7 Beta and, as a result, we have decided remove the initial 2.5 million limit on the public beta for the next two weeks (thru January 24th). During that time you will have access to the beta even if the download number exceeds the 2.5 million unit limit.

Running Steam on windows 7, neither Half life 2 or Lost coast worked.

That sounds like the old 64bit mode issue with HL2 and Lost Coast..
If they are locking up on the loading screen with the 64mode active message in the top left...........you need to alter the command line in Steam for those games with "-32bit"..
It used to be just for those two titles as far as I remember... Episode 2 etc work no problem anyway..
Might be worth trying out..

You would think Steam would have fixed this by now...

On other news: How are people finding it? Any compatibility options? Any noticeable performance change between Vista 64 and Windows 7 64?

Just read the original thread post of mine :p it's way faster than Vista x64 at many things, and i was using 32-bit then. The x64 just improves performance even more now it uses all my RAM.

Everything has worked too, no problems. You could actually use the OS right now as a main OS, it really dont feel like a beta. The only thing i cant get to work is GTA4, says the OS is not Vista. Normally what works when that happens is running the .exe in Vista compatibility mode to trick it into thinkings it's Vista, but dont work with that game.

Grand stuff !
Bit of an annoying issue that raised its head on XP64 and Vista64......but at least its a simple fix

So far, so good.................I'd be lying if I said general gaming performance has jumped from Vista64, but performance is similar or just slightly behind using the current Vista64 8.12 Catalysts with a lot of current and recent titles..
Did have one crash in Catalyst Control Centre while looking through colour adjustments, but haven't been able to repeat it so I'd let it slide..
Crysis series, Far Cry series, Tomb Raider series, COD4+5, Half-Life series, Left4Dead etc etc all work with no issues (although I'd make sure you have the latest DirectX Runtime installed)..

Outside of gaming, the OS is fairly robust with similar or better performance in many apps although there are a few programs and drivers (X-Fi for one) out there that either need a bit of help (compatibility mode) or plain don't install (Acronis TrueImage is the biggest casualty for me, although I hear Daemon Tools also doesn't install (but VirtualCloneDrive is fine)..

In good shape at this early stage, and certainly more stable than Vista was at its beta stage..

Tried installing it twice and gave up due to the problem with the 4gb Nvidia chipset memory core error. And that was the 64 bit version.
I am surprised to see that they have still not learned the basics from the old Vista install. I used to get fed up with taking out one stick of Ram to install an O/S especially when it supposed to work with it. I am certainly not getting inside my PC just to satisfy MS. If it doesn't work this time on install with my full compliment of RAM why should I bother. I may wait for Beta 2 and see how that sorts out the problem but even though I have written papers to MS on the elementary point they seem to have been ignored or bypassed.
I am certainly not buying a new Motherboard to satisfy MS.

I've not heard of anyone having this issue (atleast on here). Could try a BIOS update? Both 32-Bit and 64-Bit have installed fine for me with 12GB.

Anyway, back later kids, my GTX 295 has arrived so i'm off for play

i cant get the thing downloaded let alone installed keeps referring me to a live search result page saying it cant find what i was lookin for so ill try it again a bit later :(

well i have just down loaded it and i think its great only a few hickups but nothing major, far less problems than when i first had vista now that was a pain in the ****

all drivers working and programes that have not installed where fixed with compatability options which have proved to be a god send every thing has installed only thing i cant get working on it is a virtual drive

games i have tried so far dead space, tomb raider, pes 9,prince of persia, crysis, left for dead all running quicker than a jamacian at the 2008 games

windows 7 even seems to have fixed an issue i had with my x2 the screen going black randomly and if it has then windows 7 is sold already bring on chrimbo 09
