Windows 7 Impressions

Enjoying using the OS. Actually do pefer using to Vista. Have had a couple of blips though. I dont like the way you can not customise the launch properties of a game in Games Explorer, or change it's Icon. During AVI play back I have had a few total locks and had to hard reset. This was using both WMC and WMP. I do find windows error reporting nicking loads of bandwith and killing the internet. Release/renew clears that. Love the changing backgounds and getting used to the task bar now. Hope I can get the RC's when they come out.

Anybody had any probs with the installers not working, im trying to install Steam after doing a reinstall of 7, but when i set it away, i keep getting something about the installer not working properly, and do i want to let MS know, yet i got it installed on here fine before.

I had an issue with "Windows Explorer has stopped working" when running Windows Update. I found the above link which also mentions something about MSI installer too. The registry fix provided on that page seems to have done the trick for me :)

Ah well.. I've gone back to Vista for now.

win7 has got oodles of potential, but the lock-ups, installer issues and dodgy video rendering render the OS largely unusable. I know it's for beta testing, but it's hard to test an OS that stops responding half the time, and fails to install applications the other half :/

I'll give it another go in beta2 :)

any people tried both x86 and x64?
x86 is more stable for me, same as vista x86 shame a have to loose 700MB ram though but random blue screens were too much.

and fails to install applications the other half :/

Did you try the fix that the Action Centre throws at you when an installer stops working? Fixed my machine so Office could install (haven't installed anything else yet, hardware issues with my DVD drive right now!).

An issue with the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) client in Windows 7 beta is causing Explorer and some MSI-based installers to stop working properly.

1) Click the Start button , click All Programs, and then click Accessories.

2) Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. In the User Account Control window, verify that Program name is Windows Command Processor, and then click Yes.

3) In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type or paste the following text at the prompt:

reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions /va /f

4) Press Enter to install the solution.

5) If The operation completed successfully displays, close the Administrator: Command Prompt window to complete this procedure. If "ERROR: Access is denied" displays, repeat this procedure from the top, making sure you clicked Run as administrator in step two.

Yep that helped me fix the Cuesplitter not installing problem , good fix :)

Anyone any ideas as to why i can't get 5.1 out of games, i get no sound out of my rear speakers at all, yet i ive configured the sound settings to 5.1, and also done the test which plays the sound out of each speaker in turn, so i know its not that.

I'm having several internet slow downs as well. Figured it might be with W7 tlaking to the mothership. Is there any way of disabling this? Not that I don't want to report errors, just so that I can get a normal experience on the net. I'll report errors manually.

Although, many of the slow-downs seem to originate from this website. Anyone else experiencing really slow access to this forum?

Fire Wizard, some things simply do not work with UAC enabled (because of the way the software was written)

I'm actually massively impressed with the performance of 7; shoved it on my parents old pc (AMD3400 + 9800 Pro; epic) and it runs with everything turned on at a decent rate. Totally usable.

Grabbing another terabyte hard drive soon to shove a copy on for myself.
