Windows 7 Install?

I recently bought two vertex 2E's and put them in a raid 0 array.

The thing I was looking forward to most was was how quick windows 7 would install with these two brand new super speedy ssd's. However I was quickly deflated when the install went just as slow as it did on my old HDD.

Now we all know, something is only as strong as it's weakest link, so I thought the dvd-rom media where windows 7 was being installed from was the bottleneck here? am I right?

I have now bought a corsair voyager GT 16GB flash drive, these things get rave reviews and there access times and transfer rates really do beat the competition.

So I suppose I am asking, if I install windows 7 from the flash drive, how long would you reckon it would take to do a complete fresh reinstall onto the raided vertex 2e's from the flash voyager gt.

I don't really need to reinstall at the moment, so I wont be testing it out for a while, but it will be interesting to see the difference if any when i do. I have installed from flash drives before and I think i noticed a difference although I never timed it accurately.

Yeah certainly sounds quite intresting, how much slow did the install take and was it in 32bit or 64bit mode of the install on the SSD.

On my samsung drive the install for the Ultimate 64bit version took no more the 15 minutes, but it could depend on other factors of the PC such as the spec of your PC. Could you possibly post back with a short spec for me to look at.

I mentioned I never really had an accurate time. I'm guessing around the 20-25 minute mark. I tend to think a lot of people accidentally exaggerate there install times, I'm not saying this is the case with yourself though.

I have a Q6600 oc'd to 3.0Ghz (liquid)
4GB 1066Mhz RAM
2 vertex 2e's raid 0
Asus maximus formula mobo
sapphire hd 3870

I've had it for well over two years now and I know it's not the greatest but it certainly shouldn't be preventing the install of windows 7 going to its optimum.

I see some guys in the reviews reporting less than 10 minute installs, and 3 seconds to install software. I personally think it's an over exaggeration to justify the cost of a very expensive ssd.

The only real benefit I am loving from my ssd is the noise reduction. The old 74GB raptor was terrible.

Other than that I wish I spent the £340 on a weekend at the Hilton.

P.S. It's a 64 bit edition, and it is also Windows 7 Ultimate
 
I found it much quicker installing Win7 from a USB pen, and I was using a HDD, i'm sure the DVD drive is the bottleneck. Do you notice a big increase in speed when booting/opening programs?

I mean i have two of the standard HDD from samsung because they are some of the best drives around, but if SSD's are quicker then that should be the case. I have never tried the Raptors or any SSD's for that matter.

But saying this read and write speeds whilst installing WIndows 7 will be decreased due to the ammount of data being read of the drive, this as you said could be the problem, what make is your drive this will almost certainly be your problem if nothing else.

But once Windows 7 has installed the SSD's will take over and make sure you run a Rating of your computer located when you right click my computer in the start menu and then you should see a number it will need to be run once you first use WIndows 7.
 
I am using a Crucial 4GB USB pen and my install time of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on 2 x Vertex 2E 60GB (Raid O) takes about 11 - 12 minutes and that's 2-3 minutes faster than on the Crucial C300 128 GB, but you should be quick to remove the USB pen as soon as the computer restart, otherwise, you will get back to the initial install screen. PC is I7 920 clocked at 4.0 on ARIIE mobo with 6 GB of ram. The speed of your install might also be affected by the speed of your clock.
