Hey software section people.

I'm buying a new 'puta next week;

Question is, do I stay with Windows 7 (current PC is running 7) or do I move up to 8 with my new desktop? :).

Cheers, Tummy.

If you have to get a new license you would be silly to buy anything apart from win8.
Not only are the licenses better meaning its cheaper like for like.
It has many added features which are useful on top of that it has metro.

Even if after a few weeks you can't get to used to metro, there's several third party apps like startisback

Just watch youtube to understand how it all works and you should find it fine though, just don't use it for the sake of using it. If the desktop app is better use that, if the metro app is better use that.

huh?

I'll be buying a new copy of Windows (which Overclockers will install for me on the system), I just can not make my mind up between which one.

How have people got along with Windows 8 as a desktop?

My Dad uses it on his work laptop and has been really impressed with it.

As I siad if you are buying a new license, which you are, go windows 8, there is no reason not to do so.

Even if you don't get along with the new UI, you can revert back to a much more win7 style by using a third party solution.

As to how people find it, it's split into three camps like usual.
People who like it
People who hated it, until they actually tried it and within a week or two grew to love it (biggest camp I would say)
Those who hate it.

To be fair, I use OSX on my MacBook Pro so I'm used to not having a start bar.

I think I'll go with Windows 8, as you say, if I'm getting a new license it makes sense to get Windows 8.

If you don't know the licenses have changed for win 8

There is no retail, however oem allows you to uninstall it and install it on to another pc.

Where win7 oem was technically tied to the motherboard.
So win8 oem is the same as win7 retail more or less.

Which makes win8 great value

I've had my PC up and running for probably less than a day so far.

I've had more crashes to blue screen so far that I have had collectively on Windows 7, really not very happy with Windows 8.

While it feels quick and I like some of the features, I'm so disappointed to have crashes all the time.

I've used both Windows 7 and Windows 8 and I didn't experience any blue screens/crashes on Windows 8.. i'd say Windows 8 is more adapted to touchscreens though with some of the features; hence why I switched back to Windows 7 and am enjoying it again.

That said if you are getting crashes I highly doubt it's the OS, especially if it ends up as blue screen; most likely a driver problem somewhere.

I've had drive problems thrown at me twice and I *think* touch wood that everything is up to date.

Windows update also just fails pretty much each time too.

This isn't going to be a win8 issue, find the problem hardware/driver.

Do the usual memory/HD drive, removing overclocks, checking event viewer, trying a reinstall etc.

I've had two crashes since my last reply.

I think I'll stump up the cash for a copy of Windows 7 as that works :).

I've reinstalled.

I'll check the memory and HD drive but I think I'll buy an oem of Windows 7.

I've had 10 or so people with OEM Win 8 installations suffering blue screens and the like.
While there are several damn useful features in Windows 8, most people I know haven't got the time or inclination to be faffing around trying to fix issues that don't crop up in a Win 7 install so they have simply reverted back.

As I said, I've come from Windows 7 where I did not have a single problem to Windows 8 where I have had a steady stream of blue screen crashes, different reasons.

It's more frustration on my part, I don't want to mess about trying to figure out why, I would just like the system to work.

I'll run memtest, I'm just creating the usb boot, and I'll read events viewer and report back but I feel like ordering another oem of Windows 7.

Things die and each os gets tighter in restrictions. it is very unlikely to be win8. You are better of finding the issue.
For example on XP my cd writer worked on vista it didnt. The drive was broken, but xp just ignored it.

Or things break spontaiusly, HDD was working fine a week or so after win8 seemed to have a few issues 12hours latter the HDD totally died and wasn't recognised in bios.

You really are better of trying to sort it, rather than hiding your head in the sand and hopping its not a bigger issue.
