Might be a stupid question and I have already put on my flame proof suit but...

My father has just given me a Win 7 Pro 32-bit upgrade disc and key (never been used) I know that normally a product key covers both the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions of Windows. However does this work with the upgrade key. e.g. could I borrow someone non-upgrade 64-bit disc and do a clean install using the key from my upgrade?

Sorry if this has been answered in a previous thread, however I don't really have time to go searching as I normally would.

TIA

The upgrade key will only work as an upgrade, all Windows 7 media is the same regardless if it says upgrade on it.

Using the upgrade DVD, do a clean install without entering a product key which will give you 30 days before requiring activation.

Once you've done a clean install, do another install again but this time select "upgrade" then enter your product key.

This loophole allows you to do a clean install with an upgrade key and is perfectly legal.

You only need to do the double install method if your computer does not have a previous version of Windows installed.

Even if it doesn't, you still need to own a previous version of Windows [that you are no longer allowed to use elsewhere] for it to be license legal to upgrade.

Hi guys, thanks for the help.

Managed to put 64-bit on no problem, wouldn't activate online, so I ran through the automated phone activator and it went through no problems

You can do a registry trick rather than installing twice. Can't remember the key but you should be able to find it via Google. Didn't need to do this myself but I did it for a mate and it's been fine.
