i've got windows 7 64 bit pro, 6 gigs of ram installed, and resource monitor (task manager->performance tab->resource Monitor button->memory tab) showed that other than 'in use' memory and 'modified memory' , nearly all of my ram was 'standby' memory (something like 4 gigs) i.e. very little was 'free'.

I ended up changing memory mapping in the bios off (I new the implications of this) and booting up, rebooting into the bios and turning it back on again, now 4 gigs of ram are 'free' as I would expect.

anyone else see a discrepancy in resource monitor? I'm on a p5k-e wifi mobo btw.

Your expectations were wrong in this instance.

"Free" memory is not to be concerned about at all in Vista/7.

It means Superfetch is doing its thing and Windows will not become slower one iota because of it.

Available RAM is the figure to take a look at and that will be normal.

Having 4GB of RAM "Free" is completely wasted RAM, you may as well do as someone mentioned in another thread, put your 4GB ram in the box and stash it away so that Windows doesn't utilise it at all so it's Free at all times.

thanks mrk, that makes good sense, it's odd that my free memory has increased significantly now, and standby has correspondingly reduced, maybe ive upset superfetch somehow.

Whatever you changed in the BIOS has caused Superfetch to reset itself perhaps, it will retrain but that will take time.

Windows Vista/7 will tailor superfetch base don how you use your PC so making such changes will have a negative impact usually until it gets back up to speed.

Out of 4095 MB of total memory I have
Cached 967
Available 2883
Free 2075

It is a 3 day old install of Win 7 Pro
I would have thought the free memory would have been much less. Superfetch is on BTW.
Any comments would be welcome

3 days is not long enough :p

It takes a few weeks of regular usage to ease in to usage routines.
