Does anyone know if students can get a full copy of windows 7 cheaper than normal?... I have found a number of websites that offer a cheap upgrade but i need the full version for a fresh install on a new build?

If you are a student then check out dreamspark website

edit - Just checked and you can only get server 2003/8 or Win 7 Upgrade :(

Check out the MSDNAA, if your university has signed up for it, you can get a free OEM copy of Windows Professional. But last time I checked it's only if the course you're doing is under the faculty of computing. This may be different for other universities, but this seems to be the case for my university and a few other friends in other universities.

In higher education? Ask if your organisation is setup with MSDN Academic Alliance. You'll get the full version through that for free.

EDIT: Beaten like a ginger middle child.

just check out software for students...that where i get mine from.

This or MSDN:AA.

Software4Students will only be an upgrade version though. MSDN:AA is awesome now, since they put one up for Windows 7 release, and now for Windows 7 with SP1 included!

I study engineering for the record, and my uni let me on it.

Also MSDN AA has 4 copies of Windows 7 available. 32 and 64 bit, with and without SP1. The 32bit key will activate a 64bit install, so you really have 4 free Windows 7 Professional 64bit licenses.

Win7 Upgrade, install over itself - job done - legal/EULA(?) Not sure

The clue is in the name.
It's an UPGRADE - so guess what, you have to have a license to upgrade from.
So no, it is totally against the EULA and you might as well download yourself an illegal copy and be "just as legal".

Ye seems you have to be in specific departments within my uni to get it cheaper :(... most of the ones I can find on google are either upgrades or look dodgy..... is their much difference between home/proffesional/ultimate?

The big difference for me between home & pro is that pro includes the XP mode if I want, and i need it - I have a Nikon film scanner with no W7 drivers, ditto for an old flatbed scanner, and also ark-ware for work which won't work in an x64 environment.

But your best bet is to visit the MS website, and look at the differences there to decide for yourself.

I was wondering if that worked or not!

Awesome to know that the 32-bit activates as 64-bit :D Makes those two keys a bit more useful now :D Haha

If your sitting with XP now, it is a waste of time upgrading to Win 7, when Win 8 is comping out next year. Might as well keep your money rather than throwing it away.

I've not been keeping up with this too much, but I was under the impression that Metro was optional and mainly for tablets rather than desktops?

That preview Microsoft released for Win 8, metro was not optional, and clicking boxes is not my idae of a desktop. Hopefully come the beta, we might get the option between metro, and icons.
