Windows 7 taking long to display folder contents!

Hi,

I've recently done a fresh install of Windows 7 64Bit (Ultimate), but find that it sometimes takes soooo long to display the contents of a simple folder (you can see the green loading bar at the top taking it's time as well), whereas Win XP (64bit) will display the contents immediately :(

Is there any way I can fix this?

Sorry if this has been asked before elsewhere here but I wasn't too sure what to search for.

Any help would be great.

If it's a fresh build, it's still building thumbnail caches etc. It'll speed up over time to be completely un-noticable.

Thanks all. I'll try and defrag, I haven't in ages :p I'll also give it some time and see how it progresses, otherwise I'll bump this post ;)

If you're not bothered about thumbnails, you can customise the folder to display quicker.
Right click on folder > Properties > Customise.
Optimise this folder for: Documents. Or you can choose General items.

Seems a bit better now, however if I try and save an image from the internet via Chrome, it still hangs for a few seconds. This doesn't happen all the time though.

First defragment hdd after check hdd performance with some benchmark or mayby your hdd is dying?

You should probably check your HDD, as weird performance issues can be sign it is not as healthy as it used to be!

Another though occurs to me, after someone mentioned MSE, is that some AVs scan files as they are accessed/opened. You could try disabling your AV to see if this is the case.

I know NOD32, among others, gives you fine-grained control over the real-time scanner, allowing you to stop them scanning on a file open [it will still scan on file creation/execution etc].

Do you have mapped drives to other machines on your network? One thing I've come across is that if you have mapped drives then every time you do a file actions (save, open etc) it seems to want to quickly nudge each of the attached drives and with mapped drives this can cause a noticeable pause (especially if one or more mapped drive is disconnected).

Also bear in mind that windows 7 will be indexing your files which will slow things down a bit until it gets up to date.

Thanks, I'll look into my anti-virus and also check the drives, not that they are that old, but then again I've had duds fresh out the box as well.

Though XP never had any of these problems, so I'm wondering if it could possibly be the indexing?
