I have being looking into buying Vista Ulitmate X64 Edition but with all this talk off Windows 7 will we be seeing it this year? If so I might just hold off on Vista

I imagine we will, Microsoft won't miss out, it's already decent in the latest release candidate, I can't imagine there is anything major left to do that will delay it until 2010.

I'd hold off also. I've just installed the Beta and more stuff works out of the box that it did with Vista (no surprise perhaps since it's newer), and it all seems very smooth and easy. I like it.

If you must buy Vista now then go for Home Premium (or Business if you really need Domain access).
Ultimate - well unless it contains a killer app you really need?

From what I can tell you won't be missing much if you get Vista instead of 7. If you are waiting to build a new PC I'd just do it if I were you. If not however you may as well wait if you don't need a new OS otherwise.

I'd hold off for 7. It's shaping up to be an awesome OS, with Vista's eyecandy and stability with performance more like XP (on lower end computers). It's new taskbar is quite nice as well. If you are building a new PC and need an OS now, then get hold of a Windows 7 beta and install that until the actual OS is released.

Vista will still be supported for a while yet (xp still is) so if you desperately want a fully released version of Windows then going the Vista route will be fine as well and if that's the case get the Home Premuim x64.

you've not used 7 then. it's a lot nicer, and worth waiting for it

I have a Windows 7 beta key but I cannot find a download link. I have just purchase Vista Home Premium but I am wondering whether I should quickly cancel the order and try to get hold of a Windows 7 download. Is it easy to get hold of one?

EDIT: I cancelled the order just in case and saved myself £100. I am able to download Windows 7 Beta 64bit Build 7057. Is this the latest?

Is it risky using a Beta as an OS for my main rig? I will buy Windows 7 when it is released anyway.

Yes, that's the latest. It is also the first release candidate.

I personally don't think so in this case but there's always a danger that it will go breasts up. Only risk what you can afford to lose i.e. lots of external backups of pictures and emails etc.

I was going to buy Vista but i think i may have a look at windows 7 now, has there been any release on what sort of price windows 7 is going to be?

Well, I have also bought a new hard drive which I will use as my primary drive (with Windows 7). So I may as well keep my existing HDD in there with Windows XP on it and leave all my important stuff on there for now as a backup in case W7 goes **** up.

It's not likely to be - it's more than likely just another leaked daily interim build. They may have changed the EULA to indicate it's RC1, but that means very little.

So they changed it to say "RC1" just for the hell of it? They thought, "we'll just call it RC1 even though it's not"? Can't see it myself.

Yes, they did. It isn't.

Microsoft build windows every day. They will iterate many builds that 'could' be RC1 before they actually pick one. Then when they've picked it, they will test it to death and fix bugs in it before they release it.

RC1 will be released in April, and you can near guarantee the watermark on it will say so (rather than this one, which just says it's build 7057.winmain.090305-2000).
