So if I want to stick Windows 7 on my laptop what is the best build to get at the moment? From what I understand it is pretty much fully stable enough to overright my Vista install? (Bearing in mind I also have a desktop running Vista).

I hope it is released this year. I have and will be looking forward to it's release. Hope they make it domain friendly though.
I can guarantee it will be out by the end of the summer, in time for all the Christmas PC inventory and sales...

everything works fine on vista 64,i have no need for windows 7 at the moment
if its not broke,then i do not need to fix it
So in that sentance why the change from xp to vista?
I'm going to be building a core i7 920 based PC in the next month or two and am wondering what to do about the OS. I can get Vista Ultimate for £40 (or rather my wife can cos she's doing a course with the OU) so I could go down that route (although I'm unsure as to whether to go for the 64 bit version). I understand there are no beta keys available for Windows 7 anymore so if I obtained the Windows 7 Beta and used that for my OS on the new PC how would I get around the fact I don't have a beta key? I will be looking to move to Windows 7 eventually so what's the best option for me at the moment? Shall I just get the £40 Vista Ultimate (64 bit version?) and upgrade to Windows 7 later?

Yes, it contains DirectX 11.
I doubt you could tell much about it just by the desktop interface :x
