Windows 7 to use Dx10.1 API

One of the most interesting things was the official confirmation that Windows 7 will use DirectX 10.1 API, something that works well in ATI's advantage. It doesn’t look that DirectX 11 will be ready to launch together with Windows 7 and it will probably come later even though there might be some DirectX 11 hardware to launch in 2009.

Sounds like a good idea to keep the window memory usage down.
However, there are a fair few Graphics cards out there that don't support DX10.1

What will Microsoft be doing about DX10? Will is still use the same kind of concept?

Welp DX is an API anyway, they can always slap on DX11 as a Service Pack for Vista and Win7.

I doubt it. I'm sure Microsoft were wanting DX10.1 to launch as much as ATI wanted it but Nvidia got their way.

Oh dear is correct, especially about the part where he mentioned that taking all the complaints about Vista and using them for building Windows 7. :eek:

Would the Aero feature make you upgrade from XP??

If we are just talking OS any graphics card will do. You may loose some eye caddy but I'm sure that will have little to no impact.

It will not be just the compositing engine that is accelerated in W7. Just like Apple are doing with 10.6, Microsoft are looking into using the GPU for more than just fancy effects. Now if that engine requires DX10.1......
