Sounds like a good idea to keep the window memory usage down.
However, there are a fair few Graphics cards out there that don't support DX10.1

What will Microsoft be doing about DX10? Will is still use the same kind of concept?
 
Can your DX8 card run Aero?

It can't run Aero but it can run Vista fine.

Is Aero such a big deal??
Would the Aero feature make you upgrade from XP??

If we are just talking OS any graphics card will do. You may loose some eye caddy but I'm sure that will have little to no impact.

It will not be just the compositing engine that is accelerated in W7. Just like Apple are doing with 10.6, Microsoft are looking into using the GPU for more than just fancy effects. Now if that engine requires DX10.1......
