Hi there.

I'm looking at getting a new rig soon, and having some OS woes, so I was just curious about this hypothetical situation

As the Student upgrade of Windows 7 is £30, would it be possible to install a version of Vista that - hypothetically ofcourse - had already been installed on a previous computer onto a new computer, and then just use the Windows 7 Upgrade?

Is not possible? Or not legal?

If you have a Retail license of Windows Vista, providing you first remove it from the machine which it is currently installed on and it is not in use once you have installed Windows 7 on your new system, then that's absolutely fine. However, if your copy of Windows Vista is an OEM license, you would be required to purchase an additional Windows Vista license, either in the form of a Retail or an OEM license to qualify for a Windows 7 Upgrade license which you can use for your new system.

As far as weather or not you can ignore the terms of an Upgrade license but still manage to install Windows 7 is irrelevant from my point of view and you will not be correctly licensed if you do so. :)

Cheers for the response, but I think i'm abit out of luck - the offer for the student upgrade seems to have ended :(

I have an Upgrade and Disc for Windows 7, but already used it on my laptop. Not looking forward to having to shell an unexpected £80

What are you studying? If you're doing something IT related at university level you may have access to MSDN AA through your faculty.

When you're spending what, a few £100 on a new machine, is finding another £80 that much hassle?
You can get it even less if you buy legitimate copies from Ebay (seen them going for £60 - £75).
Just stay away from those selling you "keys" - because this is not legitimate.

It may be just another £80, but that's £80 which I could have used to upgrade towards a 5850!

I suppose that it's inevitable though :(
